Overview

The Teachable AI Experience team is an interdisciplinary research group bringing together artificial intelligence, community engagement, and machine learning research to explore how communities can actively shape the training and evaluation of AI models.

The team develops research platforms, methods, and prototypes that enable human–AI feedback loops, with a current focus on improving the representation of people with disabilities in image generation models. This work includes designing tools, data pipelines, and evaluation workflows that support inclusive, trustworthy, and high‑impact AI. The team also adopts modern AI‑assisted and agentic coding workflows to accelerate engineering delivery, improve research quality, and support production‑ready research systems.

Role Summary

This maternity cover role provides hands‑on research engineering support across the Teachable AI Experience team’s research platforms, model evaluation work, data management, and research operations.

The successful candidate will own day‑to‑day technical delivery across research platform development, evaluation pipelines, human study support, data readiness, and the effective use of agentic coding workflows. The role is central to maintaining delivery momentum and enabling community input to be collected, processed, evaluated, and incorporated into downstream machine learning research and engineering efforts.

The role is highly collaborative, working closely with researchers, engineers, and community partners in an inclusive, multidisciplinary environment.

Key Responsibilities

* Lead the development and ongoing maintenance of the Community Library Creator research platform, including experimental API and UI features using technologies such as FastAPI and React to support human‑AI feedback and synthetic data workflows.
* Maintain and extend model evaluation pipelines, covering quantitative metrics (e.g. FVD, VBench), qualitative evaluation workflows, and quality tracking across human studies and platform outputs.
* Develop tools for data generation and analysis to support the exploration and measurement of model capabilities, user testing, and research studies.
* Support community deployments for current NGO cohorts, including evaluation task generation, platform readiness, and issue triage.
* Manage data ingestion, post‑engagement processing, and the handoff of research‑ready datasets for downstream analysis, evaluation, and model development.
* Apply and strengthen agentic coding workflows and modern AI tooling to improve research velocity, code quality, and codebase stewardship.
* Maintain strong engineering quality and security standards by addressing compliance and vulnerability issues and upholding testing, type checking, and linting practices.

Required Qualifications & Experience

* PhD in computer science, machine learning, software engineering, or a related field, or equivalent industry or research experience.
* Strong software engineering skills in Python, with experience building maintainable, well‑tested, and secure software for evaluation workflows, data pipelines, or experimental research platforms.
* Strong analytical and problem‑solving skills, with the ability to work effectively in ambiguous research and engineering environments and translate evolving research goals into practical technical solutions.
* Experience with machine learning experimentation, model evaluation, active learning, human studies, or human‑in‑the‑loop AI systems.
* Experience working with FastAPI, React, cloud‑hosted services, containerised environments, or data pipelines.

Preferred Experience

* Experience using modern AI‑assisted or agentic coding workflows in a disciplined way to improve both engineering quality and delivery pace.
* Experience working with sensitive or community‑contributed datasets and preparing data for downstream research and model development.
* Experience developing tools for data generation and analysis to support model capability exploration, user testing, and research studies.
