They will need to have hands-on experience and a good understanding of steam and condense systems. This role is subject to a DBS check to be obtained by the candidate, which must be successfully cleared prior to commencement. Job Summary The Specialist Craftsperson – Mechanical will carry out complex and non-routine mechanical maintenance activities across the site. The postholder will install, maintain, service and repair a wide range of mechanical plant and estates services equipment. This role involves fault finding, calibration, condition surveys, planned preventative maintenance (PPM), emergency repairs and technical support to colleagues and contractors. The role includes participation in emergency recall outside normal rostered hours where required. Key Responsibilities Diagnose, fault-find and repair mechanical engineering plant and equipment. Install, reassemble and commission new mechanical systems. Carry out planned preventative maintenance in accordance with maintenance schedules and safety procedures. Maintain and repair systems such as heating systems, boiler houses, standby generators and associated plant equipment. Undertake condition surveys and inspection evaluations. Plan and support complex activities such as service shutdowns and interruptions. Ensure all works comply with relevant health and safety regulations and internal procedures. Complete all job documentation, worksheets, PPM records and maintenance system updates accurately. Liaise with engineering supervisors and request goods/services where necessary. Supervise maintenance assistants and contractors where required. Provide training and guidance to new team members. Work independently or as part of a team across the site. Respond to emergency situations, including recall outside standard working hours. Person Specification Essential Experience Post-apprenticeship experience within a mechanical maintenance environment. Experience working in an industrial or complex plant setting. Experience in mechanical services systems maintenance. Ability to assess workload and prioritize tasks effectively. Experience fault-finding and resolving issues in situ. Desirable Experience Experience within a hospital or healthcare environment. Boiler house or large plant experience. Experience working with control systems. Qualifications Essential BTEC HNC / HND, Approved Apprenticeship, City & Guilds, NVQ Level III Technicians Certificate or equivalent in a relevant mechanical discipline. Competency and understanding of pressure systems. Desirable Qualification and experience in control systems. Knowledge & Skills Strong understanding of mechanical services systems. Knowledge of standby power systems, UPS, IPS and generator systems (desirable). Ability to interpret engineering drawings and specifications. Competent in using specialist tools and testing equipment. Strong written and verbal communication skills. Ability to prioritize and work both independently and within a team. IT literacy for maintenance management systems and data input. Training Requirements The successful candidate will be required to complete mandatory training within three months of appointment, including: Safe use of ladders and steps Manual handling Radio communication systems Customer service and diversity awareness Additional specialist training (e.g., confined spaces, working at height, pressure systems) will also be required where applicable.
