Go back University College London Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust

ST3+ equivalent doctor in Acute and General Medicine

The closing date is 26 May 2026

We are seeking to appoint a registrar doctor (ie with full MRCP) to join our team in Acute Medicine at University College London Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust for a fixed-term 6-month appointment. This post offers specialist experience in acute medicine combined with substantial training opportunities. The clinical work includes both day and night shifts working on the acute medical take alongside another medical registrar, as well as experience in the Acute Medicine Unit (AMU), ambulatory care and on cardiology ward rounds. There is also substantial self‑development time (SDT) built into the work schedule (roughly 1 week in every 8).

Our department consistently receives excellent feedback from our trainees in the yearly GMC survey. We are committed to providing the best possible training and clinical experience to all our doctors, whether in training posts, or locally employed doctors on fixed‑term contracts.

Main duties of the job

The appointed doctor will work with a large cohort of doctors, including Foundation Year 1 and 2, Internal Medicine Trainees years 1‑3, ACCS ST1, GP ST1, Clinical Research Fellows, and consultants.

The appointed doctor will be expected to practice Acute/General medicine to a high clinical standard. They will take on leadership responsibilities, particularly during out of hours shifts. They will provide support, training, and mentorship to more junior colleagues, and maintain patient safety above all else.

They need to have skills in rapid decision‑making, safe discharge planning, and multi‑disciplinary teamworking.

The doctor will be expected to engage with departmental clinical governance, and participate in the local teaching programme. They will report to the named Consultant of the day.

Job responsibilities

For the full Person Specification and more information regarding the main responsibilities of this role, please refer to the attached Job Description.

Please note, due to anticipated high volumes of applications, this vacancy may close earlier than the listed closing date. You are advised not to delay submitting your completed application.

This is a registrar‑level role, and is thus suitable for doctors at training grade of ST3 and above. The appointed doctor will become a core member of the Acute Medicine team. It is suitable for any doctor keen for exposure to Acute Internal Medicine or General Internal Medicine.

The work schedule runs on a repeating 8‑week cycle. All appointed doctors will be supported by a named educational supervisor, and by the clinical Consultant for the day.

In the medical take, the doctor will take the position of a senior decision‑maker and help to lead the acute medical team of doctors. They will clerk patients and discuss referrals with the Emergency Department team.

On AMU, they will review in‑patients independently and formulate management plans, and discuss all cases with the Consultant. They will be expected to take on a training role to more junior resident doctor staff.

In SDEC (Ambulatory Care), they will review patients with urgent clinical needs and engage in safe discharge and follow‑up planning.

During the scheduled Self‑Directed Time (SDT), this is time for appropriate Continuing Professional Development (CPD). This can be undertaken on site or by working from home.

This post is not formally recognised for training but applicants may wish to keep a portfolio during their time with us that can be used as evidence of 6 months experience in acute/general medicine. Also, applicants holding a National Training Number (NTN) can apply for OOPT/E using the recognised approval processes. The role is also open to applicants both with and without an NTN.
