Sheffield City Archives and Local Studies Library collect and preserve a wide range of documents, books and other items relating to Sheffield and the surrounding area and makes them available to the public. The collections date from the 12th century to the present day and are used by people from Sheffield and the rest of the world for local and family history and other research. We are passionate about improving access to our services so more people can engage with their heritage.
We are looking for an enthusiastic and confident person with a flexible approach and ability to work under pressure to join our friendly and busy service as an Archives and Heritage Engagement Officer.
This is an exciting opportunity to join our National Archives accredited service and work with heritage collections spanning almost 1,000 years and lead on development, learning and outreach projects and activities in collaboration with a wide range of partners.
The principal aim of this new post is to meet the growing demand for our service from the many community, heritage and education groups across the city. The postholder will understand the barriers to accessing our services, be able to develop plans to overcome these barriers and reach new audiences, and plan, commission and directly deliver activities that allow more people to engage with the city’s histories.
The successful candidate will be confident in delivering activities such as workshops, school and university visits, talks and public lectures, to diverse audiences, as well as seeking out and developing new partnerships with stakeholders and delivery partners.
Developing an annual activities plan that will take advantage of key national initiatives and commemorations, as well as locally important anniversaries and promotional activities will be a key aim of this post, as will the planning and evaluation of activities, campaigns and communication channels.
Other important skills include developing and maintaining relationships with individuals and community and educational organisations in order to develop activities that increase take-up of our services.
You should be able to work on your own initiatives with minimal supervision, but also enjoy engaging with the wider archives, libraries and conservation teams.
You will need well developed ICT skills, experience of delivering activities and public events, project planning skills and experience of analysing performance data and using this to inform future events. You also need skills to bring to life the archive collections and use them to inspire and engage people of all ages and backgrounds.
Due to the nature of this post, weekend and evening work may be required, as will the ability to travel across the city.
