Trainee Children and Young People's Cognitive Behavioural Therapist

South Tyneside and Sunderland NHS Foundation Trust (STSFT) are seeking a Trainee Cognitive Behavioural Therapist. The successful applicant will deliver evidence‑based psychological treatment to children and young people and their families in one of our established Children and Young People’s Mental Health Services (CYPMHS) located in South Tyneside, Sunderland or Gateshead.
As a trainee, you will be expected to complete the CBT – PG Diploma in Evidence Based Psychological Therapy (CBT) at Northumbria University within 12 months. The training course commences January 2026, so you must be available for employment by January 2026.
Main duties of the job
* Professional qualification in teaching, nursing, social work, allied health professions, counselling or psychological therapy.
* Experience working in assessment and treatment of children, young people and their families.
* Experience working within the community and supporting vulnerable populations.
* Knowledge of safeguarding and promotion of welfare in children and young people.
* Knowledge of universal and specialist children’s mental health service provision.
* Ability to work as part of a multi-disciplinary team and manage caseloads effectively.
* Ability to work flexibly across varied environments.
* Key IT skills, including Microsoft Office and other associated packages.
* Organisational and full UK driving licence with access to a vehicle.
* Trained trainees must not have accessed a CYP‑PT funded training programme within the last two years of qualifying.
Person Specification
Experience
* Experience working in a children and young people’s mental health service.
* Experience providing assessments and treatments to children, young people and families.
* Experience working within the community or education setting.
* Experience of safeguarding and promotion of welfare in children and young people.
* Working in a service with agreed targets demonstrating clinical outcomes.
Physical Skills
* Hold a full UK driving licence with access to a vehicle.
* Manage own time and diary for training and service demands.
* Ability to sit, stand and walk throughout the working day.
* Occasional handling of objects using appropriate aids.
* Flexibility to work additional or unsocial hours as required.
Skills and Knowledge
* Knowledge of universal and specialist children’s mental health service provision.
* Good working knowledge of Microsoft Office and related IT packages.
* Proven organisational and caseload management skills.
* Clear report and letter writing; high standard of written and oral communication.
* Engagement with vulnerable and underserved populations.
* Team working within a multi‑disciplinary team.
* Flexible working across a range of environments.
* Working under supervision and making use of the supervisory process for development.
* Experience of risk assessments within scope of practice.
* Understanding of evidence‑based psychological therapies and child development links to childhood mental health.
Qualifications
* Will undertake and complete the CBT – PG Diploma in Evidence Based Psychological Therapy (CBT) at Northumbria University within 12 months.
* Professional qualification in teaching, nursing, social work, allied health professions, counselling or psychological therapy.
* Eligibility: no access to a CYP‑PT funded training programme within the last 2 years of qualifying.
