Purpose
As a Business Development Manager – Food & Consumer Goods, you will grow the Food & Consumer Goods business to meet RSSL’s financial targets, develop customer management strategies to achieve sales growth, and lead high‑value tactical opportunities. You will interface between Commercial, Operations, and the Customer, reporting to the Senior Group Leader Food & Consumer Goods.
Primary Accountabilities / Responsibilities
* Hunt for new sales growth opportunities in the Food & Consumer Goods industry, acting as the principal contact between the client and RSSL operations teams.
* Manage major proposals and tenders, coordinating responses from technical colleagues, collating and issuing proposals, and handling follow‑up such as presentations and negotiations.
* Lead development of and cross‑sell service offerings to tactical accounts and customers.
* Represent RSSL at external events (conferences, exhibitions, seminars, industry meetings) to achieve sales growth.
* Proactively horizon scan and provide market insights on future needs, trends, and competitor awareness, supporting the Head of Sales and corporate commercial strategy.
* Contribute to and lead company strategic initiatives and projects as required.
* Promote RSSL’s reputation through engagement with Food industry professional bodies and organisations, ensuring RSSL experts are viewed as industry‑leading influencers.
* Assist in activities that drive development and growth of the RSSL business.
* Review, understand and comply with client legal documents.
* Support the commercial team to ensure clients receive a professional service.
* Lead ethical and legal compliance responsibilities, fostering a culture of openness and ensuring team members understand compliance obligations.
Knowledge, Skills, Experience and Language Requirements
* Proven scientific background with recognised qualifications/degree or equivalent.
* Understanding of laboratory work and its application to solving customer problems.
* Ability to build excellent working relationships with clients and laboratory staff.
* Outgoing proactive approach, energy, drive, enthusiasm, and ability to motivate others.
* Team player with initiative.
* Excellent interpersonal skills and proven communication and negotiation skills across face‑to‑face, telephone, and written channels.
* Organised, able to manage multiple projects simultaneously.
* Understanding of food industry requirements, primarily R&D needs, and translating them into business opportunities and new service offerings.
* Capacity to advise on a broad range of scientific techniques to clients.
* Ability to create solutions to complex scientific and business issues.
* Intermediate proficiency with MS Office (Word, Excel and PowerPoint).
* Full UK Driving Licence.
* Fluent in English written and spoken.
