St. Joseph’s Healthcare Hamilton is seeking interested nursing, paramedic, undergraduate medical, respiratory therapy, occupational therapy, and physiotherapy students to join our Enhanced Extern Program. This employment opportunity allows students to work in a clinical environment, develop competencies, and prepare for future registered roles upon graduation. Successful candidates will gain valuable patient care experience and build connections within an interprofessional hospital environment. The Clinical Extern may be considered for career opportunities upon graduation and licensure.
Job Summary:
The Clinical Externs are unregulated healthcare providers working as part of an interprofessional team, providing patient-centered care under the supervision of a qualified Health Professional, reporting to the unit manager. They will practice in alignment with the organizational Mission, Vision, and Values, considering their scope of practice as authorized by professional colleges. Externs will be hired on a part-time contract basis, with hours determined by individual availability and unit needs, including day, evening, night, and weekend shifts.
Key Qualifications/Job Requirements:
* Enrollment in relevant programs such as nursing (RN or RPN), undergraduate medical, respiratory therapy, paramedic, occupational therapy, or physiotherapy, with specific year requirements.
* Current certification in BLS.
* Completion of SJHH mandatory orientation and training.
* Demonstrated IPAC practices.
* Good academic standing and recent clinical placement success.
* Strong communication skills, professionalism, teamwork, and critical thinking abilities.
* Respectful attitude and excellent organizational skills.
Duties/Responsibilities:
Practice under supervision, supporting patient independence through activities of daily living, mobility assistance, skin integrity measures, vital signs, comfort measures, and documentation. Final-year students may also perform delegated acts like Point of Care Testing (POCT) Glucose, upon successful competency testing.
Hours of Work:
Rotating shifts, including days, evenings, nights, and weekends, with a minimum of one 12-hour shift or two 8-hour shifts per week, with flexibility during non-academic periods.
