Overview
We are seeking a Business Development Manager to join our global Disputes Business Development team. You will be responsible for supporting UK and EMEA leadership and legal teams across the Litigation, International Dispute Resolution, Environmental, Safety & Health, Government Investigations & White Collar, and Intellectual Property practice areas. This role is based in the UK (Manchester, Birmingham or Leeds) with close collaboration to a global team to shape and implement strategic growth initiatives, drive client relationship development, identify new business opportunities, coordinate practice-specific business development plans and enhance market visibility through thought leadership.
Responsibilities
* Work with defined groups to support and develop the practice group business development plans, including forward accountability and follow-up.
* Collaborate with individual lawyers to develop and deliver personal business development plans, coach on opportunities, pursue targets and expand relationships.
* Lead on selecting and leveraging practice and industry conferences, seminars, speaking engagements, professional panels, and industry events.
* Identify market developments and thought leadership that may impact clients and provide advice on effective marketing strategies.
* Coordinate with firmwide practice groups and industry groups to leverage experience and collaboration.
* Provide primary support in preparing responses to RFIs, RFPs, pitches, proposals, capability statements and client-facing materials for new or expanded business.
* Work with the global Pitch team to marshal firmwide resources for multi-practice RFIs and RFPs involving defined practice groups.
* Develop in-depth knowledge of the practice groups, including Associate expertise, firm experience, industry/trade group organisations, trends and clients.
* Collaborate with Research Services to brief and produce research and analysis to support client pitches and initiatives and help identify and convert market opportunities.
* Manage BD budgets for the groups including planning and follow-up for specific projects.
* Work with BD&M colleagues to maximize the strategic use of social media for the defined groups.
* Maintain and oversee regular updating of practice group/office marketing materials, materials and tools, practice descriptions and representative matter lists.
* Provide leadership to secure higher rankings in leagues, directories, awards and ensure experience is captured in line with firmwide standards.
* Manage and track pitch and proposal activity, update pitch logs and report details as appropriate.
* Act as an information conduit for tracking matters and facilitate internal and external communications.
* With practice group leadership, work with Media Relations to support media efforts by identifying topical issues and sourcing comentary from lawyers; collaborate on directory and awards submissions; manage the client contact list with the e-Media team.
* Collaborate with other BD Managers to share plans, priorities and best practices and act as a liaison to drive firmwide initiatives.
* Collaborate with other offices/regions to ensure effective execution of initiatives.
Qualifications
* You must be educated to degree level — Marketing, Communications or another business degree; a Business/Marketing Masters or CIM qualification is desirable.
* Minimum of five years’ business development, marketing, sales or related experience, preferably international in a large professional services environment.
* Previous Business Development/Marketing Manager level experience; Disputes-related practice area experience desired.
* Proven project management track record; strong work ethic, attention to detail and ability to work with teams.
* Creative thinker, self-starter with the ability to manage large volumes of time-sensitive deadlines; confident and able to work independently.
* Excellent listening, verbal and written skills; ability to analyse and interpret business and financial reports; proficient with Microsoft Word, Excel, PowerPoint; high-level Excel skills preferred.
