About Us

Newham College London, now merged with New VIc Sixth Form College, is the largest post‑16 education provider in Newham. With campuses in East Ham, Stratford, Plaistow and the London City Institute of Technology (LCIoT) in Canning Town, we serve over 11,000 students across a range of pathways – including 16–18 study, adult education, apprenticeships and higher education.


The Role

The Careers Advisor will play a key role in delivering high‑quality careers education, information, advice and guidance to students across the college. The role involves raising awareness of Newham College’s post‑16 offer in local schools, supporting students with career planning, university applications and transition activities, and ensuring adults and apprentices have access to appropriate careers support. The Careers Advisor will also contribute to key college processes such as enrolment, progression and careers events, helping students make informed decisions about their next steps.


Key Responsibilities

* Deliver one‑to‑one and group careers guidance to 16–18‑year‑olds, including those with an EHCP.
* Support internal delivery sessions that enhance students’ skills and career readiness.
* Use labour market information to help students explore and understand career pathways.
* Arrange employer engagement activities including guest speakers, trips and visits.
* Represent the college at school careers events, interview evenings and taster sessions.
* Support students during induction, transition and the first six weeks to ensure they are on the right course.
* Play a key role in the college’s enrolment and progression processes.
* Develop and maintain careers resources, promotional materials and website content.
* Support adult learners with CV writing, job applications and interview preparation.
* Plan and deliver workshops to raise awareness of career options and progression routes.
* Contribute to monitoring and evaluating the careers programme, including progress against the Gatsby Benchmarks.
* Support the completion of the Self‑Assessment Report (SAR) and Quality Improvement Plan (QIP).


Ideal Candidate

* Degree in Careers Guidance and Development at Level 6 or above.
* GCSE grade 4 of higher in English & maths.
* A good understanding of education and career statutory guidance and information.
* Experience of developing effective relationship/partnership working.
* Experience of successfully working in an educational setting.
* Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
* Excellent organisational, administrative and IT skills.


Safeguarding of Children and Vulnerable Adults

In line with Keeping Children Safe in Education All employment offers are subject to employment checks including Enhanced DBS, Children’s Barred List check, DfE teaching/management Barred List check, online searches, overseas criminal record check, evidence of identity and Right to Work in the UK, satisfactory references, confirmation of medical fitness, evidence of relevant qualifications and a check of previous employment history. The College is committed to safeguarding and promotes the welfare of all learners and expects its staff to share this commitment. Staff are required to become familiar with the College's policies and to comply with the safeguarding and protection requirements for children, young people and vulnerable adults. Mandatory training in relation to KCSIE and other key areas is required.
