Overview
This is an innovative post for an individual looking to develop their role in a dynamic and well-equipped Acute Medicine Unit. The service is delivered on the Emergency Floor, with a brand new stand alone Same Day Emergency Care (SDEC) unit set to open in July 2025 at St Richard's Hospital. We recently recruited two new Acute Medical Consultants and are keen to expand our team to support future service development including medical high care. Applicants are encouraged to discuss the model with the current team.
We aim to provide first class care for our patients from arrival, ensuring rapid access to the right service at the right time. Our high priority on patient experience is reflected in the Friends and Family feedback and our commitment to patient care using the Patient First approach, with opportunities for service redesign.
This post includes a £20,000 retention bonus for the successful applicant, payable in line with our Retention Bonus Scheme policy. The retention bonus does not apply to candidates currently engaged by the Trust at the same grade as the advertised post, or to those who have been engaged at the same grade within the Trust in the past 24 months. For more information on the Retention Bonus Scheme, please contact: uhssussex.consultant.sasdoctors@nhs.net.
The appointed consultant will be a committed team member striving to improve, deliver good patient care and respond to ongoing challenges in Acute Medicine. Full-time / Part-time positions including participation in a 10 PA job plan.
Responsibilities
* Post-take ward rounds, patient reviews (including review of results, seeing patients and their relatives).
* Once weekly evening consultant review shift.
* Supporting junior doctors.
* Facilitating discharges.
* Service development.
* Clinical and managerial leadership.
On Call Commitment
Currently fully integrated within the medical on-call rota, working 1 in 7 weekends with 1 in 14 on call. There are plans to move to an annualised rota system in the near future to allow a more flexible pattern and balance work/life.
About the Unit and Working Model
The Emergency Floor concept provides flexibility with fewer demarcations between DCC activities than traditional posts. The job plan and team structure reflect this, allowing attendance at MDT meetings, x-ray discussions, and case presentations. The Emergency Floor rota is designed to balance non-clinical and clinical time to ensure continuity and logical allocation of roles during the day.
