As a forward-thinking in-house business unit, the Hampshire Engineering Services offers a range of services to the County Council and other public authorities. Our Structures Design Teams are looking for highly motivated and technically strong Structural or Bridge Engineers to be involved in the delivery of challenging bridge design and maintenance schemes. We have a great team environment, and we support and develop our engineers, so they are continuously developing their skills. Our recent projects include design of a new integral two span continuous steel composite deck bridge as part of a bypass route (£26M scheme), a £5.5M bridge replacement scheme in New Forest, a £25M refurbishment scheme of 4 major structures spanning over River Test and Network Rail tracks, several small bridges and footbridges deck strengthening and replacement (varying from 100k to £1M schemes). Future work will include among others, multi-million railway footbridge replacement and strengthening of a 27-span concrete bridge, as well as continuing small replacement/strengthening schemes. In addition, we provide technical support to external clients, developers, contractors, and other local authorities. The Role: Working in the Structures Design Teams, you will be responsible for project management and design of a wide variety of bridge replacement, strengthening and maintenance schemes, as well as the inspection and assessment of current bridges and other highway structures. Whilst taking a leading role of the scheme assigned, you will be working closely with a Senior member of the team to enable you to learn and expand your experience. You should have a good understanding of relevant design standards (Eurocodes), construction methods and contract procedures. What you'll do: You will produce feasibility studies that lead to the final design and implementation of engineering schemes, ensuring they meet current technical standards. This includes undertaking detailed designs and assessments, and preparing contract documents for both new structural works and maintenance projects, all aimed at ensuring the continued safe functioning of highway structures. A key part of your role involves carrying out inspections on all types of highway structures, with careful attention to hazards, safety, and risk. Following these inspections, you will identify, record, and evaluate maintenance needs to inform future work. You will also establish and agree on sustainable solutions—under the guidance of your line manager—that satisfy both engineering and environmental considerations, in collaboration with relevant stakeholders. You will be responsible for planning, programming, and delivering projects in line with client requirements and current standards and regulations. This includes liaising with county and local councillors, members of the public, and other stakeholders to promote and ensure the smooth implementation of schemes. You will prepare preliminary estimates for proposed schemes with direction from your line manager or senior engineers, and monitor project costs to ensure completion within agreed budgets. To support your professional development, you will maintain and enhance your technical expertise in emerging methods and technologies. You will also train, develop, and oversee the work produced by Technicians, ensuring quality and consistency. Finally, you will continually promote a positive image of the County Council and Directorate, embracing and supporting corporate initiatives throughout your work. What we're looking for: A team player with strong collaborative skills, contributing to the highway and transport functions of the Universal Services Directorate. You will be responsible for preparing or assisting with core elements of work involving the maintenance, design, management, and implementation of projects for bridges and other highway structures. Why join us? We offer challenging and rewarding work – from small bridge strengthening schemes to multi-million design and repair schemes, with the opportunity to enhance your skills and broaden your technical capabilities. Our benefits package includes details of the holiday entitlement, pension scheme, flexi-time scheme, family friendly policies and interest free travel loans and discounts. We offer a flexible, motivating and inclusive workplace. We have created an environment that you can look forward to being a part of, where you are empowered to be your best and a workplace built on teamwork where people can grow and develop in their roles.
