Advanced Podiatrist (Team Leader)
An exciting opportunity has arisen in Newcastle upon Tyne Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust for a highly skilled podiatrist with experience of managing patients with foot ulceration, lower limb arterial disease, many of whom will also have Diabetes.
This Lower Limb Ischemic Management Service (LLIMS) is an expansion of the current service which has previously only been open to patients with Diabetes and is part of an initiative to reduce health inequalities in the area.
We are looking for an enthusiastic, motivated and resourceful podiatrist to be based at the Freeman Hospital, as part of a small team of podiatry, nursing and support staff. The role will manage inpatients with foot disease and provide outpatient clinical assessment to meet the needs of patients referred to Vascular from Northumberland, North Tyneside, Newcastle and Gateshead.

Job Responsibilities
* The role will involve dynamic triage of referrals from across NENC
* To do both outpatient vascular assessment with our Periflux 6000 and WIFI scoring, whilst also providing inpatient Vascular Podiatry care to patients admitted with foot ulceration, who may have had surgical debridement
* Have knowledge and experience of using advanced wound care techniques such as Topical Negative pressure and Larvae therapy where appropriate
* To work towards an IRMER qualification to refer for radiological investigations
* To work as part of an MDT to manage complex foot ulceration, by joining the weekly virtual Vascular/Foot MDT with consultant colleagues from Diabetes, Orthopedics, Microbiology, Radiology and Vascular
* The post holder will be required to support ongoing data collection and outcome measures in order to demonstrate productivity and equitable access to the vascular department
* Support the Vascular team in decision making for patients, including treatment options to facilitate safe and efficient hospital discharge
* Collaborate with colleagues from other disciplines to utilise Evidence based practice treatment modalities and develop standard operating procedures which can be used across the trust
* Teaching of students, apprentices, and a range of qualified health care professionals
* You will demonstrate excellent communication skills, across many disciplines and geographical boundaries as a key member of several Diabetic foot MDTs
* It is also essential that applicants hold a clean driving license with access to a suitable vehicle for business purposes and are able to travel independently to support colleagues across the region.
Job Purpose
* As an Advanced Podiatrist, to act as an autonomous practitioner providing assessment, diagnosis, treatment, opinion and evaluation of a complex nature in an area of specialism
* To work as part of a highly motivated team with substantial experience as a Specialist podiatrist and in the area of specialism
* To provide an experienced and enthusiastic advanced resource and leadership for the Podiatry team taking a developmental and operational role in this specialist area of Vascular podiatry
* Using advanced knowledge to assess and treat cases in a holistic way, including a multi‑agency and patient focused approach to care, and to motivate others to work in a similar way
* The post holder is expected to develop professionally in order to develop the area of work; the development and facilitation of research and audit; lead on Health & Safety; Risk Management and the development of supervision and training programmes in the specialist area
* To ensure the smooth and efficient running of the department within the available resources via day to day management of team
* To deputise for Principal Podiatrists as required

QUALIFICATIONS
* Registration with HCPC
* Bachelor of Science Degree in Podiatric medicine and local Analgesia Administration Certificate
* Post Graduate training/experience in specialist area working to MSc or equivalent level
* Evidence of continuing professional development and post registration training
* Master's Degree in Podiatry or Public Health
* Certificate in Health Education
* Advanced Certificate in the Diabetic Foot/Diabetic foot module
* IRMER qualified to refer for x‑ray
* Certificate in independent prescribing to enable prescription of a limited range of medications such as antibiotics
* Certificate in Good Clinical Practice (GCP) to participate in research
KNOWLEDGE
* Knowledge and implementation of Departmental, Trust and NHS policies, procedures and protocols
* Advanced knowledge in the specialised area of work developed through in‑depth experience and/or study to MSc level; e.g. nail surgery, musculoskeletal, diabetes, wound care, mental health or acute sector
EXPERIENCE
* Substantial experience working in the NHS at Specialist Podiatrist level and in area of specialism with demonstrated expertise and leadership in complex caseload management
* Experience of working cohesively in a multi‑disciplinary team
* Experience of self‑motivation and demonstrating good organisational skills
* Experience of assessment and diagnosis and treatment planning/discharge planning according to clinical need of a varied and frequently medically complex caseload
* Experience of specialist areas such as diabetes, nail surgery, biomechanics, rheumatology, wound care and managing the ‘at risk’ or ‘high risk’ foot
* Experience of managing a caseload of often elderly people with complex social and medical conditions and for whom there are often communication barriers, such as deafness and unfamiliarity with medical language
* Experience of foot health education, advice and presentation skills
* Experience of supervising and motivating others
* Clinical educator experience
* Experience as clinical supervisor and appraiser
SKILLS
* Excellent clinical skills including delicate scalpel work, joint and tissue structure assessment, manipulation and diagnosis
* Effective interpersonal skills, including assertiveness and ability to negotiate; ability to manage non‑compliance / conflict
* Ability to carry out concurrent activities (multi‑tasking) and work in an unpredictable working pattern
* To demonstrate highly developed skills of reasoning and persuasion when communicating with patients, relatives and carers where there may be barriers to understanding
* Driving skills
