Pre-Registration Trainee Pharmacy Technician
We have an exciting opportunity for two Pre-Registration Trainee Pharmacy Technicians to join our well established, friendly Pharmacy team based at Liverpool Heart and Chest Hospital commencing on 1st September 2026.
Pharmacy Technicians have an important role in the Hospital Team managing all aspects of the use of medicines. You may be preparing and dispensing medicines, counselling patients, providing information on medicines or ensuring that medicines are purchased and supplied efficiently. You will work in a changing NHS environment where good practical skills, knowledge and continuous professional development are essential.
The opportunity offers two years comprehensive training in all aspects of pharmacy services on a rotational basis. It offers an excellent opportunity for self‑motivated and enthusiastic individuals to learn and perform the duties of a Pharmacy Technician under the guidance and supervision of Pharmacists and Registered Pharmacy Technicians.
You will gain experience in all aspects of pharmacy services including dispensing for wards and outpatients, provision of advice to patients on symptoms, actions and uses of medicines, stock management and procurement.
Main duties of the job
Applications are invited from suitably qualified people for a two‑year fixed‑term contract to train as a Pre‑Registration Trainee Pharmacy Technician in Liverpool Heart and Chest Hospital NHS Foundation Trust. Applicants must possess a minimum of 4 GCSEs (minimum grade C or level 4) including English, Maths and Science (Dual Science Award accepted) plus one other subject. GCSE requirement is essential. Applicants possessing Pharmacy NVQ Level 2 without the minimum number of GCSEs will not be eligible to apply.
You must have commitment to study, be self‑motivated, self‑directed, enjoy working with people and have the ability to pay attention to detail. Study in your own time up to 10 hours per week as well as studying in work is essential.
Training will involve day release to study for the Pharmacy L3 Integrated Apprenticeship together with on‑the‑job experience in Hospital Pharmacy. Upon satisfactory completion of the training period you will be eligible to register as a Pharmacy Technician with the General Pharmaceutical Council (GPhC) and apply for positions in Hospitals, Community Pharmacy, Primary Care and the Pharmaceutical Industry.
Applicants who are currently employed by the NHS on band 3 will be pay protected at their current pay band for the 2 years of the fixed‑term contract. £25,272 a year Applicants currently employed on NHS band 3 will be pay protected.
Job responsibilities
To co‑operate in the provision of patient focused pharmaceutical care with the emphasis on the technical aspects of ordering, dispensing, issuing, distribution and stock control of medicines and to gain practical experience in such under the supervision of a pharmacist or pharmacy technician. To undertake a two‑year training course for pre‑registration trainee pharmacy technicians to train in all these aspects and to complete all assignments and educational tasks to satisfy the requirements for the Pharmacy L3 Integrated Apprenticeship. To co‑operate with all pharmacy staff in providing and developing an efficient and comprehensive pharmaceutical service under the direction of senior pharmacy management for all patients treated by the Trust.
