Job Description

The Tax Compliance Assistant will support the tax team in delivering accurate and timely indirect tax compliance across multiple jurisdictions. The role focuses primarily on preparing and submitting VAT returns, assisting with balance sheet reconciliations, maintaining robust compliance records, and ensuring all tax payments are made within statutory deadlines. The ideal candidate will have strong attention to detail, an analytical mindset, and the ability to work efficiently in a fast‑paced, deadline‑driven environment.

Key Responsibilities

Prepare, review, and submit VAT returns across multiple jurisdictions, ensuring accuracy, completeness, and compliance with local legislation.
Collect, validate, and analyse transactional data required for VAT reporting, working closely with finance and operational teams to resolve issues.
Perform VAT balance sheet reconciliations, investigate variances, and ensure all VAT receivable/payable positions accurately reflect ledger activity.
Monitor all filing and payment deadlines, prepare VAT payment schedules, and ensure timely settlement of liabilities.
Completion and submission of various other compliance returns
Maintain organised, audit‑ready records of all filings, reconciliations, and supporting documentation.
Support continuous improvement of VAT processes, helping to strengthen internal controls and enhance reporting efficiency.
Provide assistance with ad‑hoc VAT queries and compliance projects as required.

Qualifications

Essential

Some exposure to finance, accounts, or administrative roles (e.g., AP, AR, bookkeeping).
Strong numerical and analytical skills, with the ability to interpret and work accurately with financial data.
Keen willingness to learn indirect tax principles, VAT rules, and multi‑jurisdiction compliance processes.
Excellent attention to detail and commitment to maintaining high data quality.
Ability to organise workload and meet strict deadlines during reporting cycles.
Proficiency in Microsoft Excel (e.g., lookups, pivot tables, basic formulas).
Clear and confident communication skills, with the ability to work effectively with finance and operational teams.

Desirable

Basic understanding of accounting concepts (e.g., invoices, ledgers, debits/credits).
Experience or awareness of VAT or indirect tax compliance (training will be provided).
Familiarity with ERP or finance systems (e.g. SAP, Sage X3, Sage 200).
Interest in pursuing a tax qualification (not essential) (e.g. CTA, ATT).
Experience of supporting process improvements in a finance environment.
