Job overview

To work as part of the MDT for Home Treatment team providing daily crisis assessment, treatment and home visits to service users under the team. Provide an occupational therapy service primarily to the Home Treatment Team, working with a caseload of clients with complex needs, using evidence based/client centered principles to assess, plan, implement and evaluate occupational therapy interventions. You will provide occupational therapy leadership for students and/or junior staff, through supervision and appraisal. You will participate in the planning, development and evaluation of occupational therapy and multi-disciplinary team (MDT) services, holding responsibility for defined projects. To regularly supervise occupational therapy students on practice placements. To carry out MDT activities e.g. generic assessments and duty responsibilities as required.

*** THIS IS A FULL TIME, 4 DAYS A WEEK (8-6p.m.) ROLE. DUTIES WILL BE SPLIT EQUALLY BETWEEN HTT PRACTITIONER AND OT SPECIFIC DAYS.

THERE IS A REQUIREMENT OF WORKING A MINIMUM OF 1 WEEKEND A MONTH.

Main duties of the job

· To provide crisis intervention support to clients with the Home Treatment Team to prevent hospital admissions, and facilitate early / safe discharge from hospital where possible.

• To select and apply occupational therapy assessments for a designated caseload, addressing occupational performance and skill deficits, enabling the client in areas of self-maintenance, productivity and leisure.

• To work with service users to identify occupational therapy goals as part of the overall care plan working within the care programme approach process.

• To plan and implement individual and/or group interventions, in collaboration with the service user (and their family), using graded activity to achieve therapeutic goals.

• To monitor, evaluate and modify treatment for service users with multiple needs in order to measure progress and ensure effectiveness of intervention.

• To demonstrate and apply a broad / high level of understanding of the effect of disability and recommend adaptations to the client’s physical and social environment.

• To assess occupational needs of a defined client group.

• To undertake risk assessments and risk management plans.

• Provide clinical training and supervision to service users extended support network as appropriate.

South London and Maudsley NHS Foundation Trust (SLaM) provide the widest range of NHS mental health services in the UK as well as substance misuse services for people who are addicted to drugs and alcohol. We work closely with the Institute of Psychiatry, Psychology and Neuroscience (IoPPN), King's College London and are part of King's Health Partners Academic Health Sciences Centre.
SLaM employ around 5000 staff and serve a local population of 1.1 million people. We have more than 230 services including inpatient wards, outpatient, and community services. Currently, provide inpatient care for approximately 5,300 people each year and treat more than 45,000 patients in the community in Croydon, Lambeth, Lewisham, and Southwark; as well as substance misuse services for residents of Bexley, Bromley, and Greenwich.

Person specification

Training, qualifications and registration

Essential criteria

1. Registered Occupational Therapist
2. Post-graduate training relevant to Mental Health
3. Post-registration qualification

Desirable criteria

4. Post-graduate training
5. Membership of OT professional body and / or special interest group
6. Understanding of OT professional code of conduct and OT core skills and their application in practice

Experience

Essential criteria

7. 2 / 3 years post registration experience as an OT.
8. Working in groups / Extensive clinical experience including individual and group work.
9. Working with mental health service users (pre or post qualification).
10. Experience of audit, research and clinical governance procedures and their application in practice.

Desirable criteria

11. Practice Placement Educators course.
12. Experience of working in an inner-city, multi-cultural environment.
13. Experience of working with people with challenging behaviours.
14. Experience of specialist Mental Health settings

Knowledge and Skills

Essential criteria

15. Broad / high level understanding of Mental Health disorders and treatment models.
16. Sound / detailed knowledge of legislation relevant to Mental Health.
17. Specialist knowledge and application of OT assessments and interventions and outcome measures, relevant to client group.
18. Experience of planning and co-ordinating treatment with an understanding / working knowledge of the importance of service user involvement.
19. Understanding of OT professional code of conduct and OT core skills and their application in practice.

20. Open to new ideas and awareness of general issues that might have relevance to service users involvement.
21. Training and facilitation skills.
22. Effective / high level verbal and written communication skills.
23. Ability to manage own workload / work autonomously and determine priorities.
24. Demonstrate commitment to client centred practice.
