Job Description

SEND Teacher

Specialist Therapeutic School –, BerkshireTemporary to Permanent Opportunity

MPS/UPS + SEND Pro rata daily rate

A specialist therapeutic school located in the rural area of Sulhamstead, near Reading, is seeking a dedicated and compassionate SEND Teacher to join their team on a temporary to permanent basis.

About the School

This independent special school supports pupils aged 11–16 and provides a highly personalised, therapeutic approach to education. The school places strong emphasis on emotional wellbeing, re-engagement with learning, and preparing pupils for independence. Small class sizes enable staff to form strong relationships with pupils and deliver education that is carefully tailored to individual needs.

The school supports young people who may have experienced disrupted education and benefit from a calm, structured and nurturing environment. A strong multi-disciplinary approach is embedded across the setting, with education delivered alongside therapeutic and pastoral support.

Special Educational Needs Supported

The school primarily caters for pupils with complex Social, Emotional and Mental Health (SEMH) needs, including:

* Social, Emotional and Mental Health (SEMH)
* Autism Spectrum Condition (ASC/ASD)
* Social, Emotional and Behavioural Difficulties (SEBD)
* Attachment difficulties
* Anxiety-related and trauma-informed needs

Most pupils have Education, Health and Care Plans (EHCPs) and require consistent routines, emotionally informed teaching, and a therapeutic approach.

The Role

The SEND Teacher will be responsible for delivering engaging and differentiated lessons that meet both academic and emotional needs. Working closely with support staff and therapeutic professionals, the role focuses on helping pupils re-engage with education, build confidence, and make meaningful progress.

Key responsibilities include:

* Planning and delivering personalised, adaptive lessons
* Creating a safe, calm and structured learning environment
* Supporting pupils to regulate emotions and manage behaviour positively
* Working collaboratively with support staff, therapists and families
* Tracking progress and contributing to EHCP targets

The Ideal Candidate

The successful candidate will:

* Hold QTS or an equivalent teaching qualification
* Have experience working with SEND, particularly SEMH and/or autism
* Demonstrate a calm, patient and resilient teaching style
* Be committed to inclusive, trauma-informed practice
* Be open to a temporary role with the opportunity to transition into a permanent position

What’s on Offer

* Small class sizes and strong staff-to-pupil ratios
* A supportive and close-knit team environment
* Ongoing training and professional development
* Opportunity to move from temporary to permanent employment
* A rewarding role making a genuine difference to young people’s lives
