An exciting opportunity has arisen for a suitably experienced HCPC registered Biomedical Scientists to join the flow cytometry section of the Specialist Integrated Haematological Malignancy Diagnostic
Service (SIHMDS)/Haematology at Great Ormond Street Hospital NHS Trust.
The SIHMDS Haematology Flow Cytometry Lab specialises in the diagnosis and monitoring of paediatric haematological malignancies, platelet and red cell membrane disorders and solid tumour work
specifically in relation to neuroblastoma. The laboratory also participates in multiple clinical trials including novel CAR-T therapy for the treatment of acute B-Cell, T-Cell and myeloid leukaemia.
You will support the routine service. This will include sample preparation and acquisition using flow cytometry, assisting in assay development and validation, accurate data keeping, general laboratory housekeeping and maintenance of flow cytometers. The post holder will also have responsibilities in training and contribute to the departmental quality systems for accreditation with UKAS.

Main duties of the job
Technical, Scientific and Professional
· Undertake laboratory techniques in line with department standard operating procedures
· To carry out all laboratory investigations to a high standard of scientific and technical excellence.
· To ensure analytical accuracy, and confidentiality of results observing the Data Protection Act, using the Pathology computer system.
· To operate and maintain (where appropriate) laboratory equipment in prescribed manner
· To troubleshoot equipment and assays
· To assess, initiate and monitor appropriate action when a situation may compromise service delivery
· To attend appropriate seminars, lectures and training sessions as indicated by PDP, agreed with the manager at IPR.
· To participate in Continuing Professional Development (CPD).
· To maintain registration with relevant professional bodies (HPC)
· To participate in annual joint staff review (PDR)
Clinical
· To analyse and report results of investigations, to interpret results to assist diagnosis at routine level
· To ensure that all results are reported within agreed turn around times
· To add clinically relevant comments, in line with laboratory policy
· To advise clinical staff of appropriateness of investigations relating to patient’s condition and to request further tests where necessary

* Specialist Portfolio/MSc. or equivalent experience working in a Haematology laboratory
Experience/Knowledge

* Knowledge of the working of NHS trust Pathology laboratories
* Knowledge of Quality Assurance including UKAS standards
* Experience of Quality management Systems
Desirable criteria
