Overview

We are looking for an experienced and motivated Pharmacy Technician to join our friendly and supportive GP practice team. We are expanding to meet increased demand and to provide flexibility for holidays and time off.


Responsibilities

Main duties of the job

Clinical

* Deliver patient-facing and supporting roles to ensure safe, effective medicines use through shared decision-making.
* Undertake medicines optimisation tasks such as checking inhaler technique, supporting medication reviews and reconciliation, and using consultation skills to help patients use medicines effectively.
* Support reviews and reconciliation for new care home patients, synchronise medicines during care transfers, liaise with community pharmacists, and refer to pharmacists for structured reviews.
* Provide specialist expertise (where competent) on public health and social care needs, including lifestyle advice, service information, and tackling health inequalities.
* Contribute to shared care protocols and liaise with specialist pharmacists for complex cases.
* Support antimicrobial stewardship to reduce inappropriate prescribing.

Technical & Administrative

* Work with the PCN multi-disciplinary team to deliver efficient medicines optimisation, ordering, returns, and waste reduction.
* Provide training on safe, legal handling of medicines and support EPS implementation.
* Build relationships with pharmacy teams and wider healthcare colleagues to support integration across care settings.
* Supervise reception teams in sorting prescription requests, allowing GPs and pharmacists to focus on complex cases.


About us

We are a friendly, high performing, mid sized GP practice with an orientation towards training and development of medical staff. We have been established in Norbury for over 20 years and have many staff who have been trained in the practice and worked here for many years.


Job responsibilities

REPORTS TO: Practice Manager

HOURS: 20 hours per week

The role will also require pharmacy technicians to support the implementation of national prescribing policies and guidance within GP practices, care homes and other primary care settings. This will be achieved through undertaking clinical audits (e.g. use of antibiotics), supporting quality improvement measures and contributing to the Quality and Outcomes Framework and enhanced services. In addition, pharmacy technicians will assist in the delivery of medicines optimisation incentive schemes (e.g. medicines switches) and patient safety audits.

Pharmacy technicians will provide leadership for medicines management systems across PCNs, supporting practices with a range of services to get the best value from medicines by encouraging and implementing Electronic Prescriptions, safe repeat prescribing systems, and timely monitoring and management of high-risk medicines.


Person Specification


Qualifications

* Professional registration with GPhC
* BTEC/NVQ level 3 or equivalent in pharmaceutical sciences.
* Experience of working as a qualified, registered pharmacy technician in primary care, community or hospital pharmacy
* Evidence of continued professional development (CPD)
* Postgraduate qualifications of a relevant nature e.g. FdSc in Medicines Management/Pharmacy Services; BTEC Therapeutics.


Experience

* Awareness of general practice and the agenda for medicines
* 3 years post-qualification experience
* Experience of working in Primary Care
* Experience of working in a busy environment and meeting deadlines
* Good clinical pharmacy knowledge, including terminology
* Knowledge of pharmacy law and ethics.


Skills

* Able to analyse and interpret prescribing data.
* Computer literate and familiar with Microsoft Office packages.
* Excellent communication skills, verbal and written.
* Effective time management (Planning & Organising).
* Ability to work as a team member and autonomously.
* Good interpersonal skills.
* Problem solving & analytical skills.
* Ability to follow policy and procedure
* Flexibility to work outside of core office hours.
* Have a clean full driver’s licence.
