Company: BAMA South West
Type: Self-Employed / Part-Time
Location: Field-based (South West region) & Remote/Office-based
Overview
BAMA South West is seeking a detail‑oriented Fabrication Detailer to bridge the gap between architectural concepts and our workshop floor. This is a critical "front‑end" role where you will be responsible for ensuring that what we build in the shop fits perfectly on‑site. You will travel to various sites to capture high‑precision measurements and translate those findings into technical "shop drawings" ready for fabrication.
Key Responsibilities
* Site Surveying: Conduct on‑site "as‑built" surveys using manual tools (tape, laser) or digital reality capture to record structural openings, elevations, and existing obstructions.
* Technical Drafting: Translate architectural/design drawings and site data into detailed 2D/3D fabrication drawings.
* Shop Deliverables: Create clear, annotated shop drawings, including
o Weld symbols and joint details.
o Flat patterns for sheet metal folding.
o BOM (Bill of Materials) and hardware schedules.
* Verification: Ensure all designs account for material thicknesses, bend deductions, and installation tolerances.
* Collaboration: Act as the technical link between the client/architect and our fabrication team to resolve design clashes before production begins.
Required Skills & Qualifications
* Proven background in metal fabrication, secondary steelwork, or architectural metalwork (stairs, balustrades, etc.).
* Expert‑level skills in CAD software (e.g., AutoCAD, SolidWorks, Advance Steel, or Tekla).
* Ability to take accurate measurements in complex, "real‑world" environments (where walls aren't always straight and floors aren't always level).
* Deep understanding of DFM (Design for Manufacturing) and how metal is cut, bent, and welded.
* Must have a valid driver’s license, reliable transport, and (if self‑employed) your own CAD hardware/software.
Preferred Qualifications
* Experience with 3D Laser Scanning or Total Station layout.
* Knowledge of local building regulations and structural steel standards (e.g., UKCA/CE marking requirements).
* Ability to provide NC or DXF files for CNC plasma.
