Consultant Anaesthetist – General Anaesthesia

Queen Elizabeth Hospital, part of University Hospitals Birmingham NHS Foundation Trust, is a Level 1 Trauma Centre and a major teaching hospital that sees over 2.2 million patients a year. The anaesthesia department provides care across complex specialties, including neurosurgery, cardiothoracics, hepatobiliary surgery, and the region’s largest solid organ transplant programme. The role also involves pre‑operative care, regional anaesthesia and participation in the Enhanced Post‑operative Care Unit.
Main duties
• Deliver anaesthetic and peri‑operative services across a wide spectrum of surgical specialties, including general surgery, trauma, plastics, ENT, maxillofacial, interventional radiology, urology and gynaecology.
• Cover the General On‑call rota, providing emergency theatre cover and participating in the out‑of‑hours Thrombectomy Service.
• Provide teaching and training to junior doctors and medical students, support the new RCOA Anaesthesia curriculum and contribute to structured teaching programmes.
• Participate in research, service development, audits and quality improvement initiatives.
• Engage in educational and national teaching opportunities, including potential appointment as Honorary Senior Lecturer in the University Department of Medical Sciences.

* Inclusion on Specialist Registrar or eligibility for inclusion on the register within 6 months of start date
* FRCA or equivalent GMC Specialist qualification
