Main Purpose of Job:
To oversee the delivery of high-quality practical lessons within the Science department at all key stages in the school. In conjunction with the curriculum leader and class teachers, ensure a safe environment for students to undertake investigative practical work, with an awareness of relevant health and safety legislation.
Main Duties and Responsibilities:
1. Prepare materials, equipment, and teaching aids for classroom use, following instructions from the Curriculum lead, Science staff, or Lead Science Technician.
2. Maintain a clean and safe environment by tidying up and cleaning materials and equipment, including managing breakages and spillages.
3. Support teachers and students during practical work, including setting up demonstrations and experiments, advising students on tasks, and demonstrating equipment safely.
4. Supervise small groups of students engaged in practical tasks as directed by the Curriculum Lead, Science staff, or Lead Science Technician, under the supervision of the classroom teacher.
5. Assist with exhibitions, demonstrations, and displays as needed.
6. Contribute to the training and development of trainee technicians within the department.
7. Prepare specialized tools, equipment, and materials within the department, if qualified.
8. Advise staff and students on hazards and safety requirements related to equipment and experiments, in line with COSHH, Health & Safety, and CLEAPPS guidelines.
9. Stay informed about current safety guidelines and legislation.
10. Manage the issue and return of materials and equipment, including reimbursement processes, in accordance with school policies.
11. Check for missing or damaged equipment, maintain inventories, and report issues to relevant staff.
12. Test and maintain equipment regularly, including portable appliance testing, and undertake repairs within your skills and training.
13. Recommend repairs or arrange maintenance with approval from the Head of Science or Lead Science Technician.
14. Operate stock control systems to ensure sufficient resources, and recommend additional needs to the Head of Science or Lead Science Technician.
15. Place orders, check deliveries, and ensure resources are stored safely and securely.
16. Organize work and storage areas efficiently, maintaining cleanliness, safety, and security through regular checks.
17. Undertake risk assessments for technician activities, maintaining and reviewing related documentation regularly.

21. Engage in ongoing professional development and training.

23. Attend staff meetings and training sessions as required.
24. Maintain professionalism, confidentiality, and punctuality, and dress appropriately.
25. Work flexibly and collaboratively with staff to meet the school's needs.
