Job responsibilities The post-holder will be accountable to the Divisional Clinical Director. The post is within the Eastman Dental Hospital Division of the Specialist Hospitals Clinical Board. Direct Clinical Care Activities The appointee will be expected to: • Be a member of the Department of Orthodontics and work in an integrated way with other members of the department; • Develop services in line with the current needs of the department; • Forge strong working relationships with colleagues within the department and multi-disciplinary teams • Share, with other consultants, clinical and administrative work, and the management and supervision of junior staff; • Manage a workload of outpatient orthodontic treatment; • Contribute to postgraduate teaching and training; • Actively participate in departmental meetings and represent the department within the Trust and externally; • Represent the department on various committees within the Trust as well as taking responsibility for particular delegated areas according to their interests and availability. The Clinical Director is responsible for delegating these responsibilities; • Ensure cross-cover with consultant colleagues to maximise patient experience and the efficiency of the service. Clinical Governance, other duties and obligations Clinical governance is assuming an ever greater importance within the NHS, and within the Division and Trust. All consultants are expected to contribute to the development of governance in its widest sense. The appointee will have an overriding duty of care to patients and is expected to comply fully with best practice standards. He/she has a responsibility to comply with Trust policies for personal and patient safety and for prevention of healthcare-associated infection (HCAI); this includes a requirement for rigorous and consistent compliance with Trust policies for hand hygiene, use of personal protective equipment and safe disposal of sharps. Knowledge, skills and behaviour in the workplace should reflect this. At annual appraisal, the appointee will be asked about application of practice measures known to be effective in reducing HCAI. The post-holder will comply with the Trusts clinical governance requirements and participate in related initiatives where appropriate. This will include participating in clinical audit and review of outcomes, working towards achievement of national and local performance management targets, complying with risk management policies, and participating in the consultant appraisal process. The post-holder will also be responsible for maintaining satisfactory patient notes and, when relevant, for entering data on to a computer database in accordance with the rules and regulations of the Data Protection Act. In line with HSC 2003/11, it is UCLH Trust policy that clinicians who wish to introduce an interventional procedure that the clinician has not performed before, or has only performed outside the NHS, must seek approval from their divisional and medical directors. The intention to introduce the procedure must then be notified to the Quality and Safety committee. The committee will require assurance that the divisional director has reviewed the safety and efficacy of the procedure, if it is not subject to NICE guidance, and that the lead clinician has discussed any equipment or staff training issues associated with it with the relevant general manager(s). If the proposed interventional procedure does not appear on the NICE website, the clinician should register it with the Interventional Procedure Programme on the NICE website. The Clinical Effectiveness Coordinator in the Governance department is available to help and advise clinicians wishing to introduce a new procedure Research The Orthodontic Department has a strong research programme. The postholder would be expected to contribute to clinical research projects, including the supervision of MClinDent students. Education and Training The postholder will be involved in postgraduate teaching and training. He/she would be expected to fully participate in the programmed teaching activities of the Department as required. He/she would also be expected to assist and participate as required in the continuing professional development activities of the Department towards General Dental Practitioners, Specialist Practitioners and other health care professionals. Clinical Audit To undertake an active part in the audit activities of the Department, including undertaking personal audit and supervision of audit projects. Job Plan The consultants job plan is expected to comprise the following programmed Activities per week on average, to be carried out on UCLH sites, with no on-call commitment. The new post-holder will be expected to discuss and agree a detailed job plan including personal and professional objectives with the Clinical Lead and Clinical Director within 3 months of his / her start date; and the Consultant may be required to undertake a prospective diary exercise to inform this process. The majority of the job plan, for Programmed Activities related to direct patient care, follows a team based approach. The part of the job plan related to wider departmental activities, supporting professional activities and personal objectives is more individually tailored. Person Specification Professional Qualifications Essential • Eligible for full UK GDC Registration- NB: Non UK trained doctors must be on the GDC register by date of interview. • Membership in Orthodontics, or equivalent • On the GDC Specialist List in Orthodontics: NB: Non UK trained doctors must be on the Specialist Register in Orthodontics by date of interview. • Successful completion of an SAC-approved 2 year minimum training programme in a Fixed Term Training Appointment (FTTA) in Orthodontics or within 6 months of completion of training, or equivalent, which follows on from the pre-CCST training period of 3 years, or equivalent • Possession of a Certificate of Accreditation or eligibility for a CCST in Orthodontics Desirable • Fellowship in Dental Surgery or Membership of the Faculty of Dental Surgery, or equivalent. • Attained the ISFE in Orthodontics or equivalent before commencing consultant post Clinical Experience • Clinical training and experience in Orthodontics equivalent to that required of a UK CCST. • All aspects of orthodontic care with particular emphasis on the management of complex problems and multidisciplinary care, including orthognathic, hypodontia, ortho-paediatric dentistry interfaces. • Experience with a wide range of orthodontic techniques and materials. • Experience of innovative treatments.
