Consultant Psychiatrist – Older Peoples Mental Health
Organization: NHS Ayrshire & Arran
Shift pattern: Monday‑Friday 9:00 a.m. – 5:00 p.m., plus on‑call duties.
Key responsibilities
* Deliver comprehensive psychiatric care for patients aged 65 and over, registered at GP practices in Wemyss Bay, Greenock, and Gourock.
* Provide both outpatient and inpatient care at Ward 4, Larkfield Unit, Inverclyde Royal Hospital.
* Lead clinical work across multidisciplinary teams in community and hospital settings.
* Facilitate and conduct regular case discussions, senior clinician meetings, and management discussions.
* Support the integrated Community Mental Health Team (CMHT) including social workers, Mental Health Officers, and allied health professionals.
* Participate in teaching medical students from the University of Glasgow.
* Contribute to the training of junior doctors, with trainer status expected and opportunities for higher trainer status.
Qualifications and experience
* Full GMC registration and license to practice.
* Eligible for the Specialist Register (CCT or CESR).
* Experience or eligibility to act as Resident Medical Officer (RMO) and Acute Mental Health Practitioner (AMP) under the Mental Health (Care and Treatment) (Scotland) Act 2003.
* Demonstrated clinical leadership and experience in older peoples’ mental health is desirable.
* Flexibility to work a 10‑PA basis (8 DCC, 2 non‑DCC) with options for part‑time or less‑than‑full‑time arrangements.
* Available for on‑call commitment of 1 in 25 (non‑resident) as part of a regional rota.
Facilities and support
The post is supported by a multidisciplinary team including nursing, psychology, occupational therapy, physiotherapy, and administrative staff.
Facilities available: Larkfield Unit (acute and functional/organic wards), Argyll Unit (memory clinic, outpatient and therapy services), and Orchard View (HBCCC). Clinics are primarily based at the Larkfield Unit with strong links to the integrated community team at Crown House, Greenock.
