Consultant in Head & Neck, Dental and Endocrine Pathology

Weare looking for an individual to fill this replacement post within the CellularPathology Department at St Jamess University Hospital.

This is a full time consultant post within the Pathology Clinical Support Unit to support the provision of Dental, Head &Neck and Endocrine pathology services to The Leeds Teaching Hospitals NHS Trust(LTHT), the Leeds Dental Institute, and the region. The service currently has two specialist histopathologists, one beingfull-time and one being half-time. This post will represent an addition to thecurrent team and is a direct replacement of a recent full-time vacancy. The case mix is extremely diverse and includes oral &maxillofacial, ENT, salivary gland, odontogenic, cervical node, thyroid,parathyroid and adrenal gland histopathology specimens. Thyroid, salivary glandand neck node fine-needle aspirate samples are also covered by the group. Thereis a large postgraduate training programme in the region which includes medicaland dental trainees which the group provide training for. There are stronglinks with the academic department of pathology with the largest clinicalacademic training programme in the country.

Main duties of the job

Thesuccessful applicant should possess FRCPath (or equivalent). They should beincluded on the Specialist Register or within 6 months of CCT at the time ofinterview if currently within a training programme within the UK. In accordance with the consultant appointmentregulations, all other categories of doctors must be on the SpecialistRegister.

Applicants should haveestablished skills in head & neck, dental and endocrine pathology and demonstrableinterest and experience in the specialty. A strong commitment to undergraduateand postgraduate teaching is desirable.

Consideration will be given to applicantswho wish to work full or part time and those wishing to job share.

Job responsibilities

In relation to this post, it is a full time (10 PA) replacement consultant postwithin the Pathology Clinical Support Unit to support the provision of pathology services toThe Leeds Teaching Hospitals NHS Trust (LTHT) and the region. Our departmentworks in a collaborative and flexible way to deliver a sub-specialisedpathology service tailored to the needs of the tertiary centre.

The appointeewill have specialist experience in the areas of head, neck and endocrinediagnostic surgical pathology, and also have expertise in the reporting ofhead, neck and endocrine cytopathology specimens. We have developed the principles ofthe Royal College of Pathologists guidelines to try and achieve full staffingand an equitable distribution of work among the consultants in our department.

Any candidate who isunable to work the fulltime for personal reasons will be eligible to beconsidered for the post. If such aperson is appointed, modification of the job content will be discussed on apersonal basis with the Trust in consultation with consultant colleagues.

2.OBJECTIVESOF THE POST

The specific objectives of the post areas follows:

i)To provide, in collaboration with theirConsultant colleagues, a timely and reliable pathology service in Cellularpathology. This will specifically include areas of practice relating to headand neck pathology including oral & maxillofacial pathology, endocrinepathology and non-gynaecological head neck and endocrine cytopathology. Furtherdetails of the relevant services are included in section 9.

ii)Where appropriate, to participate in theprovision of the review service, which is part of the tertiary serviceactivity. It is recognised that, depending on the level of experience of theappointee, further training and experience may be required prior to theassumption of this duty.

iii)To provide advice and support to otherclinical colleagues, to be available to discuss histopathological findings andto contribute to the audit and monitoring of the clinical effectiveness ofmedical care.

iv)To participate in multidisciplinaryclinical care and maintain a regular programme of surgical multidisciplinaryteam meetings.

v)To cover other consultant colleaguesfor periods of annual or study leave.This will be reciprocated when the appointee takes such leave.

vi)To actively participate in andcontribute to the continuous service improvement culture in the department.

vii)To work with the Clinical Service Leadin Histopathology and the Pathology CSU Leadership Team and other staff in thedelivery of an efficient and effective pathology service in keeping with Leanprinciples.

viii)To participate in the effective runningof the department, contributing to an equitable share of workload andfacilities. To engage in the efficient use of staff and resources for thedevelopment of the service in support of changing needs of patients andclinical users within the Trust and the network and in the context of the TrustQuality Improvement programme.

ix)To maintain a close workingrelationship with the other consultant histopathologists and the technical andscientific staff within the Department.

x)To attend staff meetings and share inthe open airing of views for and against any proposals for change and theacceptance of decisions taken following such discussions. Consultants are expected to work within the establishedmanagement structure and abide by Departmental and Trust Policy.

xi)To support the procedures, standardsand initiatives required for laboratory accreditation by UKAS Ltd andinspection by the HTA.

xii)To participate in Departmental andexternal audit activity, including audits performed within Regional andNational Specialty Networks as well as quality assurance in Histopathology.

The consultant will participate in relevant NationalSpecialist EQA Scheme(s) as appropriate to their area of specialisation, andparticipate in CPD activities to support these areas.

xiii)To participate in postgraduate andundergraduate teaching as indicated in section 4.

xiv)To contribute to the professionalsupervision and training of medical, scientific and technical staff within theDepartment, including post-graduate specialist trainees in Cellular Pathologyand sub-specialist pathology trainees.

Toundertake research and development work within LTHT, if desired. The Trust isthe leading contributor to national clinical trials, and pathology consultantsall participate as required in the identification and selection of tissuesamples according to the trial protocols.In addition, consultants may contribute to clinically based researchactivity, which may be recognised within the Trusts Research Strategy with theopportunity for additionally funded sessions


Person Specification


Management, Interpersonal Skills & Other Criteria

* Understanding of current issues in the NHS.
* *Well organised and skilled in good time management.
* *Effective interpersonal skills.
* *Demonstrate ability to relate to and work within a team.
* Hold full GMC or GDC Registration with a license to practice.
* Entry on the GMC Specialist Register or GDC specialist list for Oral & Maxiollofacial Pathology via:
* -CCT or CCST (proposed CCT or CCST date must be within 6 months of interview) or
* -Portfolio Pathway (or) international applicants should comply with the GMC specialty registration process. (Portfolio Pathway applicants must be on the relevant Specialist Register at the time of application).
* Attendance at recognised management course.


Qualifications

* Hold full GMC or GDC Registration with a license to practice.
* YOUR GMC NUMBER MUST BE CLEARLY STATED IN YOUR APPLICATION FORM.
* Eligibility to work in the UK.
* Is up to date and fit to practise safely.


Experience

* Must be able to demonstrate a high level of clinical experience and competence in cellular pathology.
* Specifically, must demonstrate higher experience and specialist training in head & neck, dental and endocrine histopathology (including experience in application and interpretation of molecular testing platforms) and related cytopathology.
* Evidence of continuous career progression consistent with personal circumstances.


Training, Research, Teaching & Audit

* Should have completed a recognised training programme in Oral & Maxillofacial Pathology leading to a CCST (or equivalent) or Histopathology leading to a CCT (or equivalent).
* Evidence of the ability to carry out medical research.
* Experience in training undergraduate medical and/or dental students and postgraduate doctors and/or dentists.
* Experience of participation in regular clinical audit.
* Dedicated training time in specialist Head & Neck, dental and endocrine pathology.
* Previous experience of supervising research by junior staff.
* Previous attendance on Appraisal Techniques and Small Group Teaching Workshops.
