Interim Assistant Director of Communications and PR
Based in London, hybrid working
Length: 3 months initially
IR35 status: Inside
We are seeking an AD of Communications to lead a strategic communications function and help position the council as an ambitious, collaborative and resident-focused organisation. You will shape the council’s public narrative, ensure communications are proactive and insight-led, and support elected members and senior leaders to communicate clearly, confidently, and consistently.
Key Responsibilities:
1. Lead development of the council’s overall communications strategy, corporate narrative and annual priorities
2. Act as the council’s principal adviser on communications, public sentiment, behavioural insights and strategic messaging
3. Communicate the council’s priorities and impact internally and externally, supporting the organisation’s strategic vision and missions
4. Provide confident, politically astute advice to Cabinet, senior officers, and Members
5. Lead major corporate campaigns that drive behaviour change, promote local priorities and build trust and pride in the borough
Skills, experience and knowledge required:
6. Previous experience in a similar role within Local Government
7. Ability to influence senior leaders, Members and external stakeholders
8. Expertise in narrative development and simplifying complex messages.
9. Strong capability across modern multi-channel communications and digital engagement.
