Job Summary
Are you an established Clinical Nurse Specialist in Diabetes (or Diabetes Specialist Nurse) looking for a new leadership role? Do you want to shape the future of the diabetes/endocrine service across a large teaching hospital Trust? We are seeking an enthusiastic and ambitious Lead Nurse to provide professional leadership and management of the Diabetes and Endocrinology Clinical Nurse Specialists based at Heartlands Hospital.
Responsibilities
* Lead the professional development, clinical practice and high‑quality standards of care for the Diabetes and Endocrinology CNSs.
* Provide specialist advice on the care of people with diabetes, ensuring safe treatment, referral, follow‑up and discharge.
* Develop and deliver educational and training programmes for the multidisciplinary team, patients, families and carers.
* Manage staff, finance and change, motivating and empowering the team to maintain consistently high standards of care.
* Participate in and lead innovative improvement projects to reduce practice variation and enhance patient safety.
* Ensure operational and quality agendas are achieved and maintained, driving transformation through agreed models of change.
* Work predominantly Monday–Friday during core hours and be part of a weekend rota to cover inpatient diabetes referrals.
Essential Qualifications
* Registered Adult / Child Nurse on the NHS Nursing and Midwifery Council (NMC) Register.
* Professional knowledge through a post‑graduate degree or equivalent, supplemented by specialist training, experience and short courses to Masters level.
* Completion of a Non‑Medical Prescribing Course or willingness to undertake this if required.
* Valid driving licence.
Desirable Qualifications
* Advanced Life Support qualification.
Essential Experience
* Evidence of revalidation as required by the NMC.
* Willingness to become a practice supervisor / assessor or meet NMC standards for student supervision and assessment.
* Extensive post‑registration experience as a Clinical Nurse Specialist at Band 7 or above in a defined or associated speciality.
* Extensive experience working autonomously at a specialist level.
* Experience of delivering change management personally and as a facilitator.
* Evidence of achievements and career development in the current post and ongoing professional development/competence.
* Demonstrated expert knowledge backed by theory and CPD relevant to the speciality.
* Experience and enthusiasm for developing educational programmes, teaching, assessing and supervising others in a clinical setting.
* Experience in service development.
* Working in a multi‑disciplinary and cross‑agency environment.
* Experience of patient service‑user advocacy.
* Experience of resource and budgetary management.
* Experience of leading the writing, updating and implementation of organisational policy / procedure / guidelines associated with the speciality.
* Demonstrated ability to assess, plan, implement and evaluate specialist care delivered to patients and provide advice and information to patients, relatives and care staff.
* Awareness of current relevant NHS policy context and ability to translate it into local practice reflected in organisational policy / procedure and service delivery.
* Understanding of the principles of Safeguarding.
* Knowledge of corporate and clinical governance.

* Awareness of current research related to the speciality.

Band: 8a
Annual Salary: £57,528.00 to £64,750.00 (Yearly)
