Job overview

Band 7 Senior Radiotherapy Physicist (Bracknell and Reading)

As a Senior Radiotherapy Physicist, you will work as part of the team providing the radiotherapy physics service to the Berkshire Cancer Centre (BCC) across both our sites at Bracknell and Reading.

You will take responsibility for specific areas in the delivery of the routine physics service, working under the appropriate Lead Physicist in each area within the Section.

You will also contribute to commissioning, service development and academic research as appropriate. You may also be required to assist with other duties as and when necessary.

Date of interviews: Tuesday 15th July (interviews to be held in person, face-to-face).


Main duties of the job

To undertake the following duties in the provision of a comprehensive and quality assured Radiotherapy Physics service:

1/ Perform quality control and calibration measurements, using specialised instrumentation, on radiotherapy treatment machines and imaging equipment in accordance with local and national protocols and codes of practice.

2/ Perform quality control and calibration measurements on radiation dosimetry systems and other physics instrumentation, ensuring traceability to national standards.

3/ To participate in the commissioning of radiotherapy equipment including, where appropriate, designing procedures for, and overseeing the commissioning of, specific aspects of equipment.

4/ To participate in treatment planning for external beam radiotherapy by:

• Producing individual treatment plans appropriate to the course of treatment prescribed by medical staff, both in routine and complex situations.
• Carrying out verification procedures on plans produced by others to confirm the accuracy and appropriateness of the proposed treatment.

5/ To contribute to the provision of the department’s brachytherapy service.

6/ To contribute to the provision of the department’s in vivo dosimetry service.

7/ To act as an Operator under the Ionising Radiations (Medical Exposures) Regulations 2017.


Working for our organisation

The Radiotherapy Physics Section is responsible for providing clinical scientific and technical support to the Berkshire Cancer Centre within the Royal Berkshire Hospitals NHS Trust.

Functions include: Calibration and maintenance of radiotherapy treatment and imaging equipment, radiotherapy planning for external beam and brachytherapy treatments, radiotherapy-related IT infrastructure, connectivity and software, advising clinical staff on scientific and technical issues, ensuring the safety of patients and staff in a hazardous environment which includes exposure to high levels of ionising radiation, ensuring equipment is operating safely and effectively and the evaluation, selection, procurement, installation, acceptance testing and commissioning of equipment.

Qualifications

* 1st or 2nd class Honours degree in a relevant subject
* Relevant MSc or higher degree
* Evidence of working towards HCPC registration as a Clinical Scientist, or equivalent
* Current UK registration as a Clinical Scientist


Experience

* Experience in Radiotherapy Planning (conventional and complex techniques, including brachy)
* Experience in Radiotherapy QA
* Experience in Commissioning equipment
* Clinical experience in Radiotherapy Physics
