Applications are invited for a full-time enthusiastic and self-motivated Ophthalmic Assistant to join our small, friendly team.
The Ophthalmology Department at Salisbury NHS Foundation Trust has approximately 29,000 attendances per year. The client base covers the full life range of ages from neonates to patients in excess of 100 years.
The post holder will participate in the day-to-day service delivery within the department and should have experience working with people with visual impairments. The role is varied, offering opportunities in clinical areas such as cataract clinics, glaucoma clinics, medical retina clinics, and virtual monitoring clinics. On-the-job training will be provided to learn new skills like Biometry, Topography, Spectralis, and Retinal Photography. Assistance with ophthalmic treatments and procedures will be part of the role once training and competencies are achieved.
The ideal candidate will have a high level of accuracy, excellent hand-eye coordination, be technically minded, and possess excellent communication skills.

Main duties of the job
1. Prepare clinical areas and ensure all equipment for procedures is available.
2. Discuss imaging procedures with patients and obtain consent.
3. Perform investigational and diagnostic procedures as trained and competent.
4. Maintain cleanliness and participate in regular cleaning of equipment and areas.
5. Assist trained nursing staff with delegated duties within scope of training and competence.
6. Assist with ophthalmic treatments and procedures after training and competency.
7. Support the efficient running of the department and promote good working practices.
8. Assist patients, including those in wheelchairs, with positioning and maneuvering.
9. Maintain accurate manual and electronic medical records.

The candidate should have knowledge of ophthalmic equipment like Humphrey Field analysers and OCT machines, and be computer literate with basic ECDL skills. Person specification
* Must have a current valid driving license.
* Educated to GCSE grade C or equivalent, with basic numeracy and literacy skills.
* Experience working with visually impaired individuals.
* Experience in an acute hospital setting or primary care dispensing qualification preferred.
* Good communication skills and experience dealing with the public.
* High accuracy, technical aptitude, and excellent communication skills.
