Defra group Commercial is looking to appoint an Assistant Commercial Officer to the Monitoring And Related Services (MARS) commercial team within our Environmental Goods and Services spend category. Defra Group Commercial (DGC), part of Defra, the central Government Department responsible for growing the rural economy, improving the environment, and safeguarding animal and plant health, provides a commercial service to organisations within the Defra Network.
The post requires assisting customers and commercial teams to deliver value effectively and innovatively, meeting customer outcomes and objectives alongside Spending Review targets. Responsibilities include awarding and monitoring supplier contracts in line with Defra’s policies, ensuring value for money, and applying the Commercial DNA principles.
The role involves a positive approach to customer service, reviewing requests from internal customers, advising on commercial policies, and providing guidance on commercial issues and governance. Building relationships across the country within the Commercial network and the wider Defra and Government Bodies is essential.
The Environmental Goods and Services category manages scientifically focused commercial agreements, mainly low- to medium-value projects. The role is pivotal in achieving efficient procurement processes and enhanced customer service.
The Assistant Commercial Officer will report to a Senior Category / Commercial Officer (SEO). The role supports project delivery, procurement, and contract management, providing input to improve ways of working and efficiency.
You will be responsible for explaining Commercial guidance, keeping up-to-date with legislation and best practices, maintaining effective relationships, supporting results delivery, managing resources, developing category knowledge, providing administrative support, and supporting contract delivery throughout the commercial lifecycle.
The post-holder will be accountable for:
* Providing day-to-day advice on commercial issues and governance, contributing to savings targets.
* Supporting complex procurements, including research, market engagement, tender documentation, and evaluation preparation.
* Assisting with commercial and contractual interactions with suppliers and managing key supplier relationships.
* Maintaining effective relationships within the customer base and participating in stakeholder meetings.
* Monitoring commercial systems and ensuring data accuracy for decision-making.
* Engaging in continuous professional development to enhance commercial skills and support category planning.
