Summary: The Water / Effluent Treatment Plant (ETP) Laboratory technician is a fixed term position (6 months) [July → December inclusive] to support our site team (Ledbury) that treat the wastewater resulting from beverages manufacturer. The Laboratory Technician will be responsible for the safe and efficient testing of water samples from various stages of the effluent treatment process to ascertain the effectiveness of the treatment processes and to verify the quality of the final treated effluent prior to discharge. The Laboratory Technician will be responsible for conducting a daily routine of collecting samples from designated sampling points and carrying out routine Laboratory analysis for assessment of the organic loading entering the ETP and the removal efficiency across the various stages of the treatment process. Full training for the role will be provided. The majority of tests are performed using a photo-spectrometry bench analyser and crush tablet test kits. Measurement of suspended solids and dry matter content are performed by filtration and oven drying of samples. Other basic tests are for recording of temperature, pH and conductivity for example. Responsibility to ensure all analysis is conducted in accordance with procedures and with accuracy and repeatability. Accurate recording of results and data entry reporting is also required. Principles of Good Laboratory Practice must be followed to ensure reliability of results. The Laboratory Technician is responsible for maintaining a clean and organised working environment ensuring good levels of laboratory hygiene and following of health and safety policies relating safe handing of chemicals and wearing the correct PPE. Training will be provided. Duties and Responsibilities: The careful handling of samples from collection, analysis, Storage and disposal. Following existing procedures and HSE protocol to carry out routine analysis within the laboratory in a safe manner. Ensuring that all laboratory-based testing is conducted accurately and in conjunction with standard operating procedures. Maintain a high standard of housekeeping, careful handling and storage of pipettes and other Laboratory equipment. Take directions from our Site Team Leader on day-to-day priorities. Ensure the best use of laboratory consumables to ensure wastage is reduced and we are working as economically and sustainably as possible. Perform daily checks and calibrations on laboratory equipment as required. Responsible for data quality and integrity by ensuring information is accurately recorded. To ensure that all PPE and Health and Safety guidelines are adhered to in the laboratory. Required Skills/ Qualifications (Essential): GCSE’s in English / Math’s / Science Further education in Science, Technology, Engineering or Math’s Excellent numeracy, literacy, computer literacy Accuracy in recording measurements and weighing of materials Good awareness of all Health and safety aspects in a laboratory environment (i.e., COSHH, Risk Assessments) Analytical and problem-solving skills Required Skills/ Qualifications (Desirable): A’ Level / HNC In a science discipline Experience of water, wastewater, food & beverage industries Working for us means: The salary is between £25,500 & £27,000 per year, depending on your professional experience. Contract duration - 6 months. Hours of work - 40 hours per week, Monday to Friday. Overtime – 1.5 Holidays – 25 days 8 statutory days. Probationary Period – 6 months.
