About the Client
We’re working with an innovative team building the next generation of secure, real-time communication and data platforms. Their flagship product is a reimagining of an existing system, designed to provide robust, distributed coordination for various uses – from emergency response and humanitarian logistics to private collaboration and secure deployments in regulated or sensitive contexts.
Location & Flexibility
Office attendance is flexible. Come in as much or as little as you like. They have a well-equipped London office, but in-person attendance is only occasionally required for team meetups or workshops, always with advance notice.
The Role
We’re looking for a Senior Java Engineer experienced with Kafka and Spring Boot. You’ll help craft a secure, distributed backend system for real-time operations and resilience. Collaborate with infrastructure, AI, and frontend teams to create reliable backend services that keep teams connected when it matters most.
* Architect and build event-driven microservices using Java, Spring Boot, and Kafka
* Manage backend engineering for secure, distributed real-time systems
* Design and deliver APIs in collaboration with frontend and AI teams
* Integrate with identity and access management tools (like Keycloak)
* Implement observability through logging, metrics, and tracing
* Participate in architecture decisions and mentor peers to maintain high code quality
What You’ll Bring
* 10+ years of experience as a backend or systems engineer with Java
* Proven experience designing and operating Kafka-based systems at scale
* Expertise in Spring Boot ecosystem, including Security, Web, and Data modules
* Experience building high-reliability, high-performance event-driven systems
* Knowledge of message schemas (Avro, Protobuf) and event evolution strategies
* Experience with identity systems like Keycloak
* Strong understanding of system concerns like observability, availability, and resilience
* Background in secure, regulated, or mission-critical environments
* Comfort working with CI/CD pipelines, IaC tools, and containerized deployments
Security Clearance
This role requires UK SC clearance. They will support and expedite your clearance process if eligible. Existing clearance is a plus.
