Consultant Medical Virologist – Nottingham University Hospitals NHS Trust

Applications are invited for a full‑time (10 PA) Consultant Medical Virologist at Nottingham University Hospitals NHS Trust (NUH). Less‑than‑full‑time applicants will also be considered, provided they can meet the required days to ensure clinical service coverage.


Responsibilities

* Provide a comprehensive clinical virology service, including:
o Clinical liaison with NUH Trust services.
o Support for general practitioners and other healthcare providers in the Nottingham and Nottinghamshire Integrated Care System.
o Services for other users of the Microbiology service as per the Service Level Agreement.
* Lead the development of clinical liaison with specialist teams, participating in guideline formulation and review.
* Share in administrative duties related to the running of the clinical laboratory.
* Engage in infection‑control activities, investigate outbreaks of viral disease, and liaise with local CCDCs.
* Collect and review surveillance and epidemiological data in partnership with the NUH Infection Prevention and Control Team and UKHSA.
* Pursue research actively in medical virology and related epidemiology.
* Involve in the training of specialty trainees, FY2s, scientific, and senior scientist trainees.
* Maintain a programme of Continuous Professional Development (CPD) and participate in annual Individual Performance Reviews (IPR) and consultant appraisals.
* Contribute to the teaching of microbiology to undergraduates and postgraduates at the School of Life Sciences, University of Nottingham.


Person Specification

* Essential:
o Full GMC registration, eligible for the Specialist Register or CCT in Microbiology (or expected within 6 months of interview).
o Full and specialist registration with the GMC and a licence to practise.
o UK‑trained: holder of a Certificate of Completion of Training (CCT) or within 6 months of award.
o Non‑UK‑trained: evidence of equivalence to the UK CCT.
o FRCPath in Virology by examination or evidence of equivalent training and experience.
o Evidence of continuing professional development (existing consultants must demonstrate active participation in a recognised CPD scheme).
o Technical and clinical skills as described in the job description.
o Effective communication with patients, families and health professionals.
o Experience working within multidisciplinary infection teams.
o Strong written and verbal communication skills.
o Flexible working in a changing health service.
o Ability to use Trust IT support systems.
o Evidence of participation in clinical audit and/or quality improvement.
o Ability to teach junior staff effectively.
o Ability to travel between City Hospital Campus and Queen's Medical Centre Campus.
* Desirable:
o Higher qualification (MSc, MD, PhD).
o Specific training in communication skills, patient safety, human factors.
o Clinical virology‑related publications in peer‑reviewed journals.
o Poster or oral presentations at clinical virology conferences.
o Training in clinical or educational supervision.
o Higher degree or specific training in clinical leadership or management.
o Experience managing change in clinical or diagnostic microbiology services.
o Leadership experience in antimicrobial stewardship, infection control, or similar multidisciplinary teams.
o Evidence of leadership in quality improvement, clinical audit, or clinical governance.
o Good record of original research publications.
o Specific training in quality improvement or clinical audit.
o Training in medical education or a higher degree in medical education (e.g., PGCert, MSc).
