About us
The Driver and Vehicle Standards Agency (DVSA) is a place to forge your career. Tasked with keeping Britain moving safely and sustainably, we have an impact on road safety and on life moments that depend on travel. As a Driving Examiner you will help start people’s driving futures. We are looking for proactive, friendly and safe drivers who would like to train to become fully qualified Driving Examiners.
Training and career start
We provide all the training you need. Test centres are grouped into clusters; you will select a cluster local to you. After a job offer, you will start training online, then undertake practical training at a local test centre. You will have up to three weeks of guidance at a regional training facility before embarking on a varied career assessing the readiness of drivers seeking to secure their licences.
Day-to-day
On a typical day you will oversee seven driving examinations. You will meet people from diverse backgrounds; use your people skills to put nervous customers at ease while explaining instructions. You will use a tablet to record results and determine whether candidates meet the expected standards, delivering both positive and negative outcomes with tact and diplomacy.
To make the most of this challenge
We value respect for every learner and driving instructor, with a strong appreciation for diversity and inclusivity. You should have exceptional verbal and non-verbal communication skills, remain calm under pressure, and be a safe driver who has held a UK or EU driving licence for at least three years. You must have no more than three penalty points, a good knowledge of the Highway Code and correct road procedures. You should be friendly and team-spirited with a passion for setting high standards that drivers will uphold for years to come.
What you can expect in return
In addition to a deeply satisfying career and ongoing training and development opportunities, we offer excellent work-life balance with flexible working options, 25 days of annual leave, all public holidays and an extra privilege day to mark the King’s birthday. You will also receive additional benefits including an employer contribution to your pension of up to 27%.
If you are ready to embark on an interesting career where no two days are the same, please get in touch.
