Overview
Regional Learning Disability and Autism Unit in Dawlish (The Brook). The new regional service based in Dawlish offers inpatient support to adults with a learning disability and autistic adults. The service aims to be a centre of excellence with opportunities for ongoing training, development and career progression.
Role: Senior Nurse (Band 6) – The Brook, Learning Disability and Autism Unit, Dawlish, Devon.
Job responsibilities
* To have excellent written and verbal communication skills.
* Work in partnership with health, social care professionals and other stakeholders to maintain effective communication for patient wellbeing.
* Liaise with carers, families and advocacy groups and representatives.
* Understand complex facts or situations, analyse data, and inform MDT decision-making.
* Identify trends from data to inform care plans and positive proactive support plans.
* Coordinate and lead shifts; deputise for the service manager in their absence.
* Lead and supervise others, conduct annual career conversations and manage absence.
* Develop, deliver and evaluate evidence-based treatments/interventions.
* Participate in training and development of junior staff; monitor clinical work and maximise team skills.
* Ensure appropriate delegation of tasks based on staff skills and banding; produce staffing rotas aligned to budget and safe staffing ratios.
* Support the team to implement the Positive Behavioural Support Model and active support elements.
* Facilitate core teams to deliver care; ensure plans of care are implemented and reviewed; conduct risk assessments.
* Maintain high standards of care in line with evidence-based practice and Trust policies.
* Adhere to NMC Code of Conduct and related guidelines and legislation; review and implement standards and policies for adult inpatient settings.
* Engage in ongoing training and education; stay updated with government/local policy and best practices for learning disability and complex distressed behaviour.
* Promote service changes with a positive and professional attitude; explore innovative ways to improve patient care.
* Establish an efficient working environment and demonstrate effective risk management.
* Provide supervision and career conversations for Registered Nursing staff; manage identified junior staff in line with HR policies.
* Demonstrate leadership/management skills; participate as Practice Assessor/Supervisor to students; contribute to audits/quality improvement projects.
* Develop and empower junior staff; ensure accurate clinical documentation (written and electronic) in line with Trust policy and NMC requirements; use electronic patient records as required.
* Undertake surveys or audits as required; contribute to research projects where appropriate.
* Maintain a safe therapeutic environment for patients, staff and visitors; take responsibility for duties assigned by Line Manager; ensure fitness to undertake duties with appropriate training.
Qualifications
Essential
* A professional degree level Mental Health / RNLD Nursing qualification and registration with the UK Nursing and Midwifery Council (NMC).
Desirable
* Practice Assessor / Supervisor Training undertaken.
Experience
Essential
* Substantial post-registration experience; experience of working with people with a learning disability/autistic people.
* Experience as a Band 5 in an acute inpatient setting; MDT experience.
* Clinical supervision and Practice Assessor/Supervisor experience; management/leadership experience or willingness to undertake training.
* Excellent verbal and written communication; basic computer skills and use of mobile technology (iPad).
* Ability to handle complex/sensitive information; strong problem-solving abilities; effective risk management; ability to manage admission/discharge and team time.
* Flexible working; ability to undertake nursing procedures including manual handling and potential physical restraint.
