Speech and Language Therapy Assistant

An exciting opportunity has become available for two Band 3 Speech and Language Therapy assistant posts to join the Neurosciences Speech and Language Therapy team at St Georges Hospital NHS trust. The successful post holder will provide clinical support, as directed by the Speech and Language Therapists, to adults with neurological communication and swallow disorders who are inpatients at St Georges Hospital and Queen Mary's Hospital. One post of 0.6 WTE sits within the acute neurosciences team and the other of 1.0 WTE sits within the neurorehabilitation team. The post holder will also provide administrative support to the department as required and work as part of a progressive and supportive Speech and Language Therapy team. Team working, excellent communication skills and experience of working in the NHS and in public facing roles or education are essential.

Main duties of the job
* Assist the Speech and Language Therapy team in carrying out delegated rehabilitation duties under supervision.
* Treat own designated workload of patients and maintain associated patient records.
* Assist the Speech and Language Therapy team in the administration, clerical and domestic duties of the service.
* Assist in maintaining services and contribute to the development of services.
Job responsibilities
* Under the guidance and supervision of qualified therapists, assist with the assessment and treatment of patients on an individual and group basis.
* Carry out delegated therapeutic activities/rehabilitation programmes as part of the patient’s designated treatment plan, observing response to treatment and liaising with the primary Speech and Language Therapist.
* Supervise patients in practising and following through their rehabilitation programmes.
* Teach and demonstrate the use of equipment and techniques to optimise function, independence and safety.
* Assist in motivating patients to participate in their treatment regime using appropriate communication strategies.
* Undertake a basic assessment of each patient’s condition prior to and during intervention, observing significant change and accurately reporting to the primary therapist.
* Maintain accurate written records and use computerised data collection, including the electronic patient record system.
* Demonstrate awareness of clinical risk and manage clinical risk within own caseload, ensuring safety and security at all times.
* Develop therapeutic relationships with patients and carers, communicating in a way that respects their views, autonomy and culture.
* Cope with occasional, potentially stressful, upsetting or emotional situations in an empathetic manner.
* Ensure appropriate precautions are taken to maintain patient dignity and respect at all times.
Qualifications
* Literacy and numeracy.
* Recognised qualification in an area related to the post or equivalent life skill.
Experience
* Experience of working in the NHS, in public facing roles or education.
* Experience of working in a team.
* Interest in working in Speech and Language Therapy.
* Experience of working with people with communication difficulties.
* Previous experience working with people with a disability.
* Previous experience of data inputting.
* Experience of administrative work such as photocopying and filing.
Skills
* Highly effective written, verbal and non‑verbal communication skills.
* Basic computer skills – word processing and use of Excel.
* Ability to manage own time and work flexibly.
* Ability to follow instructions and problem‑solve.
* Make routine decisions within closely defined guidelines and procedures.

Knowledge
* Awareness of disability/social issues and impact on functional ability.
* Basic knowledge of the role of the Multidisciplinary Team.
