Overview
Position Summary:
We are seeking a Senior Embedded Software Engineer with deep expertise in motion control systems, real-time embedded software, and low-level firmware development. This role focuses on designing, developing, and optimizing firmware for microcontroller-based systems that interface with motors, sensors, and real-time peripherals. The ideal candidate works comfortably at the boundary of hardware and software and has strong hands-on debugging skills.
Responsibilities
Key Accountabilities
Essential Functions:
1. Design, develop, and maintain embedded firmware for motion control systems using microcontrollers
2. Develop software on bare-metal and RTOS-based systems with strict real-time constraints
3. Implement and optimize stepper motor control, sensor interfaces, and deterministic control loops
4. Design and implement low-level drivers, including:
5. DMA drivers
6. Interrupt service routines (ISRs)
7. Timer, GPIO, and peripheral drivers
8. Architect and debug RTOS-based systems, including task scheduling, synchronization, memory usage, and ISR interactions
9. Collaborate closely with hardware engineers to:
10. Read and interpret schematics and datasheets
11. Perform hardware bring-up and board-level debugging
12. Interface with and debug embedded peripherals such as:
13. SPI, I²C, CAN bus, UART, PWM, GPIO
14. Apply strong knowledge of computer architecture, including:
15. CPU pipelines, cache behavior, memory hierarchies
16. Microcontroller buses and peripheral architectures
17. Perform advanced debugging using:
18. JTAG-based debuggers
19. Oscilloscopes
20. Logic analyzers
21. Function generators
22. Optimize firmware for performance, reliability, and real-time determinism
23. Create and maintain technical documentation, including design descriptions and test procedures
24. Mentor junior engineers and participate in technical design and code reviews
Preferred Skills:
25. Experience with popular RTOS platforms (e.g., ThreadX)
26. Experience with motor control algorithms such as microstepping or closed-loop control
27. Experience with hardware bring-up and production firmware
28. Development experience in regulated industries, including FDA-regulated medical devices, with exposure to design controls and verification/validation practices
29. Knowledge of safety‑critical, real-time, or high-reliability systems
30. Awareness of EMC/EMI considerations in embedded designs
31. Extensive experience developing software for embedded microcontrollers
32. Strong hands-on experience with Real-Time Operating Systems (RTOS), including task design, scheduling, synchronization primitives, and interrupt handling
33. Proven experience designing and implementing:DMA-based data transfersInterrupt-driven software architectures
34. Solid understanding of computer architecture, including cache, memory, and peripheral subsystems
35. Strong knowledge of embedded communication protocols: SPI, I²C, CAN bus, UART
36. Ability to read and interpret hardware schematics
37. Proven experience debugging embedded systems using JTAG or equivalent on-chip debug interfaces
38. Proficiency in hardware/software debugging with: OscilloscopesLogic AnalyzersFunction Generators
39. Strong embedded C/C++ programming skills
40. Excellent problem-solving, debugging, and root-cause analysis skills
Qualifications
Minimum Knowledge & Experience Required for the Position:
41. Bachelor’s Degree plus a minimum 8 years of related experience or Master’s Degree plus a minimum 4 years of related experience or waiver based on experience. Degree should be in a technical discipline such as Chemistry, Math, Physics, Engineering, or Computer Science.
42. Proficiency with a personal computer and software packages.
43. Proficient in computer codes (Assembly, C, C++, Java, C#, etc.) found in the development.

The annual base salary range for this role is currently $, to $, range. Individual employee compensation will ultimately depend on factors including education, relevant experience, skillset, knowledge, and particular business needs.
