Specialist Respiratory Physiologist

The closing date is 23 April 2026

An exciting opportunity has arisen for an experienced Respiratory Physiologist to join the Lung Function team based at University Hospital Llandough (UHL) and University Hospital of Wales (UHW). This is a fixed‑term position for 9 months to cover maternity leave.

The successful candidate will play a large part in the Sleep Apnoea service, including performing and analysing respiratory sleep studies, CPAP initiation and follow‑ups. They will also need to have experience in performing lung function tests, ear lobe blood gases, challenge tests and assisting CPET. They will largely be involved in the training of BSc. Healthcare Science (Respiratory and Sleep) students and in‑house Trainee Clinical Scientists.

Applicants must have sufficient experience working as a Band 5 Respiratory Physiologist or demonstrate competency within all aspects of the Band 6 job description and person specification and be ready for progression to a Band 6. Trainee STP students due to finish in September 2026 are also welcome to apply.

The ability to speak Welsh is desirable; Welsh and/or English speakers are equally welcome to apply.

This post is a fixed term/secondment for 9 months to cover maternity leave. If you are interested in applying for the secondment position, you must obtain permission from your current line manager prior to applying for this post.


Main duties of the job

Perform all basic and specialist Lung Function tests independently, including full lung function via a variety of lung volume methods, reversibility, challenge testing, and field exercise testing.

* Assist in Cardiopulmonary exercise tests for both lead physiologists and anaesthetists across UHL and UHW sites
* Perform Sleep Disordered Breathing tests and treatment independently, focusing particularly on obstructive sleep apnoea
* Take an active role in the training of junior staff, students, nurses and medical students
* Help support the clerical administration and management of the department
* Act as a senior member of the team in the absence of the band 7/8
* Drive forward new ideas and initiatives


Qualifications

* Degree in Respiratory Clinical Physiology or recognised previous equivalent with qualifications and experience accepted by RCCP
* On RCCP Register or equivalent (or working towards)
* ARTP Full Certificate in Spirometry Course (or working towards)
* Evidence of accredited courses in specialist areas and continuous professional development
* ARTP assessment part 1 and 2


Experience

* Underpinned experience and knowledge of respiratory physiology and diagnostics
* Competent at independently performing full lung function testing and writing technical comments
* Experience in specialised testing, particularly challenge testing
* Competent in the download and analysis of overnight oximetry and multi‑channel studies & ability to use the Sleep MDT system for appropriate outcomes
* Experience of setting up patients on APAP/CPAP and dealing with issues
* Ability to write reports on lung function tests results
* Knowledge in AutoServo ventilators


Skills

* Lung function testing skills
* Supervising Healthcare Science students through completing Clinical Educator Training
* Management skills
* Lecturing/formal teaching

* Interested in learning and keeping up to date with current guidelines and articles
* Ideas on how to develop patient services with higher grades and clinicians
* Possible interest in research and academic papers in respiratory work
