Location: Covering the west; including Liverpool, the Rufford and Burscough navigation, Burnley (west), Blackburn, Chorley.

We currently have an opportunity for a Volunteer Leader. Working hours are 1931.4 annualised hours, Monday - Sunday. We are looking for an organised, proactive, engaging volunteering leader to support the Area Operations Manager. You will provide guidance to a growing number of active volunteers and our in-house team that helps maintain, conserve, and improve the environment and heritage of the waterway network for local communities and visitors to enjoy.

About the role
This is an exciting opportunity, which offers a great variety of activities and tasks from day to day. You will be the public face of the Trust, working closely with volunteers and members of the public who visit and use our waterways. Your work will be a mix of routine tasks and more involved project work. You will lead volunteers and the team to work safely and efficiently, fostering a safe, secure, and vibrant waterway network where visitors are delighted with their experience.

The role includes leading and attending events to publicise the work of the trust, promote our activities, and recruit new volunteers.

The post holder will also be required to work an annualised hours system, including any 5 days out of 7, including statutory holidays. They will be part of a 24-hour operational standby team responsible for providing emergency cover for the waterway.

Responsibilities include:

1. Organising, controlling, and leading volunteer groups, volunteer task days, volunteer lock keepers, and our in-house team.
2. Leading and attending events to promote the trust and recruit volunteers.
3. Providing relief river lock keeper duties.
4. Developing volunteering opportunities on river locks.
5. Delivering training to volunteers according to standards.
6. Updating records of work and volunteer hours.
7. Ensuring all equipment is appropriate, in good condition, and used correctly.
8. Preparing safe systems of work, inducting volunteers, and managing safety onsite.
9. Supporting team communication and providing feedback to the Area Operations Manager.
10. Participating in day-to-day team and volunteer tasks such as lock keeping, water control, vegetation management, small projects, and maintenance, ensuring environmental and heritage considerations are integrated.
11. Performing planned maintenance and minor repairs as part of a small team.

Essential experience includes working in relevant environments, leading small teams, strong organisation, effective communication, computer literacy, and a UK driving license.
