PRINCIPAL CONSULTANT (HEALTH AND SAFETY)
ROLE OVERVIEW
We are seeking an experienced Principal Consultant (Health and Safety) to provide expert health and safety consultancy services across the sport, leisure, culture, holiday park and similar sectors. The role is with Quality Leisure Management Ltd, part of the PHSC plc group of companies and a leading leisure management consultancy that provides strategic and operational support and advice across a diverse range of client organisations. www.qlmconsulting.co.uk
This role principally involves conducting audits, developing risk assessments, processes and procedures, and delivering training and advisory support to ensure our clients maintain the highest standards of health and safety compliance.
We cover the whole of the UK, so we can be flexible regarding your geographical location. This role requires regular travel across the UK, with frequent overnight stays away from home, so good access to transport links is preferable. Flexibility and a willingness to be mobile are essential.
Key responsibilities
Consultancy & Advisory Services
* Provide expert health and safety advice to a range of clients across the sport, leisure, culture, and holiday park sectors.
* Conduct health and safety audits.
* Develop, implement, and review health & safety policies, procedures and risk assessments.
Training & Development
* Deliver accredited health and safety training courses, including NEBOSH NGC, IOSH Managing Safely, CIMSPA Endorsed Health and Safety Management course, and other approved, endorsed, and regulated training.
* Identify training needs and design and develop tailored health & safety courses for clients, including local authorities, leisure trusts, universities, schools, and private operators.
* Deliver bespoke training courses, toolbox talks, and briefings.
Client Engagement & Support
* Facilitate regular client meetings, providing updates on legislation, compliance issues, and examples of industry best practice.
* Respond to a broad range of health and safety enquiries as part of a client support service.
* Act as a specialist adviser at health and safety committees, management team meetings, and consultations where required.
* Contribute to newsletters, and health and safety guidance.
* Conduct mystery customer visits to evaluate client service and operational compliance.
Incident Management & Compliance
* Investigate and prepare written reports of injuries, diseases and dangerous occurrences, liaising with clients, insurers, regulatory bodies, and solicitors to identify remedial actions and ensure compliance with statutory obligations.
* Support clients in managing enforcement body interventions, including HSE, Local Authority, and Fire Service.
* Advise and support clients in managing risks associated with civil action and claims.
Leadership & Strategic Contribution
* Offer opinion, guidance and support to colleagues on matters relating to health and safety, client enquiries, and findings from audits, training and similar activities.
* Promote continuous improvement in health and safety performance across client organisations.
* Support the director in managing health and safety within Quality Leisure Management and / or other PHSC plc subsidiaries as directed.
* Support consultants in their professional development and working programme.
Essential qualifications & experience
* NEBOSH Diploma in Occupational Health and Safety or equivalent level 6 competency in occupational safety and health.
* Certified Member of the Institution of Occupational Safety and Health (CertIOSH) working towards Chartered Member of the Institution of Occupational Safety and Health or similar level with an equivalent organisation such as CIEH, IIRSM, BOHS etc.
* Extensive experience in health and safety consultancy within sport, leisure or culture environments.
* Proven track record of conducting audits, risk assessments, and delivering regulated and unregulated training.
* Strong knowledge of UK health and safety legislation and best practices, including Northern Ireland, Scotland, and England and Wales.
* Level 3 award in education and training or ability to achieve.
Desirable
* Chartered Member of the Institution of Occupational Safety and Health (CMIOSH)
* Membership of the Chartered Institute for the Management of Sport and Physical Activity (MCIMSPA)
* Experience as an expert witness in civil or criminal health and safety cases.
* Registered occupational safety and health consultant (OSHCR).
