Head Gardener - Wiltshire - £45,000 – £50,000 + Benefits
The Job:
A opportunity has arisen for an exceptional horticulturist to lead and shape the gardens and landscape of a distinguished private estate in Wiltshire. We are seeking an experienced Head Gardener with the vision, technical expertise, and leadership skills to oversee the continued development and maintenance of a diverse and ambitious estate landscape. This is a hands-on role that combines strategic planning with practical horticulture, offering the opportunity to make a lasting impact within a unique and highly regarded estate environment.
The successful candidate will be responsible for managing all aspects of the estate's gardens and ornamental grounds, ensuring they are maintained to the highest standards while contributing to their future evolution and enhancement.
Key Responsibilities:
- Lead the management, maintenance, and ongoing development of the estate's gardens, landscaped areas, and wider grounds
- Inspire, supervise, and develop the gardening team, fostering a culture of excellence and professionalism
- Create and implement annual and long-term horticultural plans
- Oversee planting schemes, plant collections, seasonal displays, and landscape improvement projects
- Manage budgets, procurement, machinery, and specialist contractors
- Ensure best practice in plant health, soil management, sustainability, and environmental stewardship
- Work closely with the estate management team to deliver the estate's long-term vision
The Candidate:
- Significant experience in a senior horticultural position, ideally within a private estate, historic garden, country house or similarly prestigious environment
- Outstanding plant knowledge and a genuine passion for horticultural excellence
- Proven experience leading and motivating teams
- Strong organisational, planning and project management abilities
- Practical experience across ornamental gardening, landscape maintenance and garden restoration or development projects
- Relevant horticultural qualifications (RHS Level 3, Level 4, Degree, or equivalent) are highly desirable
- A proactive, self motivated approach with exceptional attention to detail
- Full UK driving licence
The Package:
- Salary of £45,000 – £50,000 DOE
- Benefits package will be offered, commensurate with experience and qualifications

All applicants must hold a minimum of an NVQ Level 2, Scottish NVQ Level 2, or an equivalent qualification relevant to the role applied for. Candidates must also have the legal right to work in the UK or hold a valid visa permitting employment.
