Job Title: Environment Manager
Location: Wokingham, UK (Office-based)
Day Rate: £425 per day – Inside IR35
Contract Duration: 6 months
The Role:
We are seeking an experienced Environment Manager to plan, manage, and maintain all non-production environments (DEV, QA, SIT, UAT, PreProd) to support development, testing, and release activities. This role ensures environment stability, availability, configuration consistency, and timely provisioning of environments to meet project and release deadlines. Candidates must be eligible for UK Security Check (SC) clearance; active SC clearance is desirable but not mandatory.
Key Responsibilities:
1. Own and manage the full environment roadmap across development, testing, integration, and pre-production stages.
2. Coordinate provisioning, refreshes, patching, upgrades, data loads, and configuration changes.
3. Work with project managers, release managers, test leads, and architects to plan environment usage and booking.
4. Ensure environment readiness for project milestones, sprints, and release cycles.
5. Maintain configuration integrity across all test environments.
6. Implement and maintain environment baselines, including application versions, infrastructure, middleware, APIs, and integrations.
7. Manage environment access, permissions, and secure data handling for SC-eligible environments.
8. Ensure environment stability, monitoring, uptime, and prompt issue resolution.
9. Serve as the primary point of contact for environment-related issues.
10. Troubleshoot environment failures, deployments, configuration issues, data mismatches, and connectivity problems.
11. Collaborate with DevOps, Infrastructure, Network, Database, and Application teams to diagnose and resolve issues.
12. Analyse logs, environment health metrics, integrations, and dependencies.
13. Ensure all environment changes follow ITIL-aligned change control processes.
14. Maintain detailed documentation including environment diagrams, version matrices, access logs, and configuration records.
15. Ensure compliance with security, audit, and regulatory requirements for SC-eligible programmes.
16. Support audits, evidence gathering, and environment-related reporting.
17. Identify opportunities for environment automation, self-service provisioning, and improved monitoring.
18. Implement standardisation across environments (naming, configuration, patching cadence).
19. Improve environment stability and reduce downtime through proactive maintenance and capacity planning.
Key Skills & Qualifications:
20. 5–8 years’ experience managing test and non-production environments in enterprise settings.
21. Strong understanding of application architecture, integrations, APIs, and infrastructure layers.
22. Experience with CI/CD tools (Azure DevOps, Jenkins, GitLab, etc.) and deployment pipelines.
23. Good knowledge of databases (SQL), networks, and cloud/on-prem environments.
24. Experience managing middleware, API gateways, microservices environments, and configuration management.
25. Knowledge of ITIL processes and environment governance.
26. Strong coordination and stakeholder communication skills.
27. Highly organised; able to manage multiple environments and demands simultaneously.
28. Strong analytical and troubleshooting mindset.
29. Ability to work under pressure during major releases and environment outages.
