Higher Scientific Officer – Fresh Water Fisheries

Location: Belfast

Salary: £37,694 per annum

Hours: Full-time, 37 hours per week (variable due to nature of work)


Join the Agri-Food and Biosciences Institute (AFBI)

AFBI’s Fisheries and Aquatic Ecosystems Branch (FAEB) conducts vital research and development to support the sustainable management of fisheries and aquatic resources across Northern Ireland. This work plays a key role in protecting ecosystems and informing environmental policy.

We’re now seeking a Higher Scientific Officer to support a major research project investigating the reproductive biology of the invasive zebra mussel within the Neagh-Bann system.


About the Role

As part of the Agri-Environment Branch, you will coordinate and undertake research on zebra mussel populations and their potential spread, supporting two main work programmes:

* WP1: Investigating the potential for zebra mussel spread through fish stocking events from the DAERA fish farm at Movanagher.
* WP2: Studying zebra mussel reproductive biology within the Neagh Bann system.

Your responsibilities will include:

* Coordinating and conducting biological sampling of fish and zebra mussels.
* Leading laboratory analyses and managing team members during field and lab work.
* Compiling data, reporting key findings, and presenting outcomes at knowledge transfer events.
* Producing detailed technical reports and recommendations.


Please note: This role involves outdoor fieldwork in varying weather conditions and may include sampling from small vessels.


Essential Criteria

To be eligible, you must have:

1a. A PhD in Aquatic Science, Environmental Science, or a related discipline

OR

1b. A degree (or higher) in Aquatic Science, Environmental Science, or a related discipline plus at least two years’ postgraduate experience in scientific data management (including spreadsheets, databases, and GIS).

Additionally, you must demonstrate:

* Proven experience planning and executing fieldwork in environmental or aquatic science with limited supervision.
* Authorship of at least one scientific paper on aquatic or environmental science, published in a peer-reviewed journal.
* A full, current/exchangeable driving licence for manual vehicles (reasonable adjustments will be considered).
