The Applied Mathematics and Theoretical Physics research cluster at the University of Sheffield invites expressions of interest from candidates to be supported for the following advanced fellowships:
– STFC Ernest Rutherford Fellowship
– Royal Society University Research Fellowship
– Royal Society Dorothy Hodgkin Fellowship
– EPSRC Mathematical Sciences Early Independence Fellowship
These prestigious fellowships target early career scientists who have the potential to become leaders in their field. Substantial postdoctoral experience (typically 3-8 years) and demonstration of an independent research program are essential.
For selected long-term fellowships schemes, the School will commit to converting successfully secured fellowships into a proleptic permanent academic appointment. This is subject to formal approval by the Faculty of Science.
The cluster brings together research in the areas of
– Gravitation and Cosmology (including cosmology, classical and quantum gravity, quantum field theory in – curved spacetime)
– High-Energy Theory (string theory, quantum field theory, holography)
– Fluid Mechanics, Solar Physics and Plasma Dynamics
Staff members in the areas of Gravitation and Cosmology and High-Energy Theory include Andrea Brini, Eleonora Di Valentino, Sam Dolan, Marco Fazzi, Steffen Gielen, Albrecht Klemm, Yu-Dai Tsai, Carsten van de Bruck and Elizabeth Winstanley. We also have links to the Pure Mathematics (especially Algebraic Geometry and Mathematical Physics), Astrophysics and Particle Physics/Astrophysics clusters in the School of Mathematical and Physical Sciences. We welcome enquiries by email.
Expressions of Interest should be submitted via a Google Form: forms.gle/ythoadTi5AiS4gJb9
Please submit one PDF file comprising an Expression of Interest, a short CV (max two sides), and a publication list. A full research proposal is not required.
If you wish to be supported for Ernest Rutherford Fellowship, please use the STFC template for your EoI, addressing Vision (max 500 words), Approach (max 1500 words), Capability to deliver (max 500 words), Career development (max 500 words) and Top 5 publications/outputs (max 500 words). Multiple EoIs are not needed.
The deadline for expressions of interest for the STFC ERF scheme is 30 June 2026 and we will review all EoIs after this date.
Please note that a Google account is needed in order to submit the EoI via the Google Form; if this is not practical, please send your information by email to the contact address with the subject title “Advanced Fellowships Sheffield 2026”.
We are committed to diversity and equality within our community and particularly welcome expressions of interest from minority groups, women, persons with disabilities and persons of any sexual orientation or gender identity.
