Position

Senior Approved Mental Health Practitioner (AMHP) – Grade D – £45,091 – £51,356

Golden Hello payment – £1,000 + £5,000 per annum; see below for further details and conditions.

Consultation grade – subject to formal evaluation under the Pay Equity Review.


Working Hours

36.5 hours per week. Daytime service: 08:45–17:15, Monday to Thursday; 08:45–16:15 on Fridays, with occasional flexibility required.


About the Role

Join Birmingham’s AMHP Hub as a senior AMHP. Deliver statutory Mental Health Act duties citywide, mentor future practitioners, and work with partners to make timely, rights‑focused decisions for people in crisis.


Responsibilities

* Operate across the city daily, responding flexibly to service needs.
* Undertake regular out‑of‑area travel to consider requests under the Mental Health Act.
* Work collaboratively with multi‑disciplinary teams to safeguard individuals and uphold their rights.
* Make timely, rights‑focused decisions for people in crisis.
* Contribute to an active learning environment that encourages peer support among AMHPs and supports the development of future AMHP candidates.


Mentoring & Development

* Participate in practice mentoring and assessing AMHP candidates, including:
o Completing direct observations, reports, and meeting agreed deadlines.
o Helping to resolve issues that may arise during placements.
o Providing a general contribution to the AMHP course where needed.
* Engage in peer observations and supervision to actively contribute to a collaborative learning environment.


What We’re Looking For

* Essential:
o Qualified Social Worker (or other professional with AMHP status)
o Valid AMHP warrant
o Experience handling complex requests under the Mental Health Act 1983
o Ability and confidence to work autonomously
o Strong understanding of relevant legislation, including case law
* Ideal:
o Ability to drive with access to a vehicle (with business insurance)

About You

This is a hybrid role based in Birmingham, and you will be required to attend the office twice a week, so you must have the correct right‑to‑work documents to work in the UK. Unfortunately, we do not support those who require sponsorship.
