Environmental Health Contractor - Food Safety Location: Somerset, UK Rate: £42-£46 per hour Hours: Minimum 24 hours/week, up to 30 hours/week Contract Duration: Starting October 2025, running through to end of 2025 (with likely extension) About the Role A council in Somerset is seeking a skilled and experienced Environmental Health professional to support its Food Safety team during a period of vacancy. This contract role is ideal for a qualified contractor with a strong background in food hygiene inspections and regulatory compliance within a Local Authority setting. The successful contractor will play a vital role in maintaining public health standards across Somerset by conducting food hygiene inspections, ensuring businesses meet statutory requirements, and supporting the council's commitment to safe food practices. Key Responsibilities Food Hygiene Inspections: Conduct inspections of food premises across Somerset, focusing on Category C, D, and E establishments. These cover lower-risk businesses such as small retailers, cafés, and mobile vendors. Reporting & Documentation: Complete inspection reports using paper-based forms, which can be submitted by physical drop-off or scanned and emailed to the council's Environmental Health team. Precision and clarity in documentation are essential. Regulatory Compliance: Ensure inspected premises comply with the Food Safety Act 1990, Food Hygiene Regulations 2006, and other relevant UK food safety legislation. Identify any breaches and advise on corrective actions or enforcement. Public Health Protection: Support the council's wider public health objectives by identifying and escalating food safety risks, contributing to community well-being. Stakeholder Engagement: Work collaboratively with food business operators and council colleagues, providing guidance and education to foster compliance and good hygiene practices.
