Orthopaedic Nurse Practitioner

The Directorateof Trauma and Orthopaedics is dynamic and forward thinking in our approach todelivering patient care. We have an opportunity to recruit a practitioner toour directorate. You will become part of our team working with both electiveand trauma orthopaedic inpatient and outpatients.

You will beworking alongside a supportive, multidisciplinary team with a dedicated team ofOrthopaedic Practitioners working across the Directorate in wards, clinics andoperating theatres. This is an ideal opportunity to progress your career. Youwill be a dedicated and compassionate Nurse or ODP and proactive in ensuringhigh quality, evidence-based care. You will need to demonstrate excellentcommunication, organisational and interpersonal skills. This is a development opportunity and where appropriate,applicants may be supported to meet the necessary competencies andqualifications (Clinical Skills and Non-Medical Prescribing). In suchinstances, initial appointment will be made on a band 6 basis.


Main duties of the job

To provide a specialist practitioner role in the assessment andmanagement of a specific patient group

To manage/lead practitioner led clinics in relation to reviewingpatients and play a key role in optimising complex treatment regimes,facilitating hospital discharge and preventing avoidable hospital admissions

Provide expert scrub and/or assistingskills in orthopaedic surgical procedures within a defined sub-specialty.

Act as the lead practitioner in theatrefor complex elective and emergency cases.

Work closely with orthopaedicconsultants to support sub-specialty development and service delivery.

Ensure best practices are followed inline with current guidelines and surgical protocols

Job responsibilities

To coordinate the delivery and development of the specialist service through the useof effective evidence-based practice in line with agreed national standards for patientsafety and monitoring.

To contribute to the organisation of multidisciplinary, patient centred care.

To be accountable for the planning and delivery of safe, effective and compassionatepatient care in relation to dedicated pathways of care, working as an autonomouspractitioner within the specialism.

To provide specialist clinical advice and support to patients and clinical staff withinthe Trust on the assessment, management and care of patients within the specialistarea.

To continuously improve clinical care standards in line with the clinical governanceframework.

To exercise accountability as set out in the NMC/HCPC Code.To ensure effective communication internally and externally regarding patient careand resources.

Provide education and training to clinical staff across the Trust.

Provide expert specialist clinical advice and support to patients and clinical staff withinthe Trust on the management and care of patients within the specialist area.

To provide direct access for patients, either face to face or telephone consultation.

To represent the service nationwide.

To play a key role in ensuring that national and local standards/targets for specialistarea are met.

To manage/lead practitioner led clinics in relation to reviewing patients and play a keyrole in optimising complex treatment regimes, facilitating hospital discharge andpreventing avoidable hospital admissions.

Ability to support the theatre staff with setting up for theatre sessions by ensuringthat all necessary theatre equipment and surgical trays are available including theappropriate operating table.

Ability to dismantle and reassemble operating tables and adding extra equipmentas necessary.

Assist in the positioning of patients on the operating table and correct placement ofdiathermy plate prior to the surgical procedure.

Demonstrate knowledge of aseptic technique in relation to surgery and theoperating field.

Undertake surgical scrubbing, gowning and gloving procedures aseptically.

Assist with surgical skin preparation and draping.

To provide assistance to the surgeon during surgical procedures anticipating theneeds of the surgeon and responding effectively.

Assist in retracting tissue as per surgeons directive

Assist in the use of electrocautery both monopolar and bipolar

Assist with the closure of wounds once competency has been achieved

Assist with application of appropriate dressings.

Assist with the transfer of patients immediately post operatively.

Safely handling, recording and dispatching specimens in line with trust policy

Person Specification


Qualifications

* Registered Nurse or Allied Health Professional.
* Degree in nursing studies or relevant clinical degree.
* Mentorship certificate/Practice Assessor training or demonstrable equivalent experience.
* Clinical skills accreditation.
* Non-medical prescribing or willingness to complete.
* Leadership and Management course.
* Qualification in specialty.


Skills and Knowledge

* Awareness of national health and social care policy.
* Knowledge of best practice in area of specialism.
* Thorough understanding of expanded roles/professional practice issues.
* Clinical teaching experience.
* Ability to provide and receive complex, sensitive or contentious information, where persuasive, motivational, negotiating, training, empathic or reassurance skills are required.
* Able to work without supervision.
* Competent in the use of IT packages.
* Evidence of competency in relation to clinical practices appropriate to the post.


Experience

* Experience of care delivery.
* Experience of the specialism.
* Experience of leading a team/supporting junior staff.
* Evidence of innovation in practice.
* Evidence of change management.
* Evidence of practice development.
* Experience of coordinating care for a caseload of patients.


Physical skills

* Ability to assist patients to move as per Trust Moving and Handling Policy.
* Able to travel access sites.
