We are recruiting a regulatory scientist to assess the environmental hazard and risk of industrial and consumer chemicals under the UK REACH and CLP Regulations.
Working in our Chemicals Assessment Unit (CAU), you will:
1. Evaluate the reliability and relevance of ecotoxicity and environmental fate information in chemical dossiers and reports.
2. Summarize and present endpoints from environmental effects studies, fate data, and model estimates.
3. Describe study test methods, highlighting data limitations and uncertainties.
4. Use data to determine environmental classifications under CLP and assess compliance with UK REACH registration requirements.
5. Provide quality assurance reviews and alternative interpretations as needed.
6. Contribute to priority setting and identify areas for further research.
7. Support test guideline development and initiatives for animal replacement methods.
8. Work within defined timescales to deliver quality outputs.
9. Build collaborative relationships with colleagues and government partners.
Responding to incidents is integral to our work. You will be expected to participate in incident roles, with training provided, and may receive additional compensation for this.
The team is part of the Research division within the Chief Scientist’s Group, with dispersed office locations. We support HSE and UK Government on environmental hazards of chemicals, proposing risk management actions and collaborating internationally.
Experience/Skills Required
You should have a degree in a relevant scientific discipline such as chemistry, biology, or environmental science, and at least two years of experience assessing environmental effects or fate of chemicals, either nationally or internationally.
You must be capable of analyzing complex data, following guidance, and communicating findings effectively. Strong writing, organizational, and communication skills are essential. Please demonstrate relevant experience in environmental hazard and risk assessment, particularly related to REACH and CLP, in your responses to competency questions.
Additional Information
The role offers flexible/hybrid working arrangements, with some travel required. Full training for incident response roles will be provided. For more details, review the Candidate/Additional Information Pack. Interviews are scheduled via MS Teams, including possible technical exercises.
