The department
Job Purpose:
Paralegal required to undertake a wide variety of commercial property, residential investment and real estate finance matters.
To operate as an effective member of the Gatwick real estate team, working on a variety of commercial property, residential investment and real estate finance matters.
The individual is expected to develop good working relationships with clients and other team members.
Achieve the targets as defined by the Group Head/Head of Department, including contribution, hours and fees. Responsibilities and Duties
To participate and contribute to the Real Estate group to ensure an effective working environment, supporting Legal Executives, Solicitors, Associates and Partners on more complex matters as appropriate.
Attend relevant technical training to ensure that skills and knowledge remain up-to-date.
To attend and contribute to group meetings.
Continuously develop their own technical expertise.
Maintain awareness of the legal market specifically relating to residential investment, commercial property and real estate finance.
Responsible for dealing with a wide range of non contentious property work as detailed above.
Responsible for assisting with commercial property transactions, including but not limited to new leases, assignments, underlettings, licences to assign, licences to alter, surrenders and lease renewals (whether inside or outside the Landlord and Tenant Act 1954).
Responsible for assisting with residential investment transactions, including drafting and reviewing contracts and transfers, due diligence and drafting and responding to requests for enquiries. Completion and post completion tasks.
Responsible for assisting with real estate finance transactions, including assisting with the preparation and completion of security documentation (such as legal charges, debentures and certificates of title), dealing with Land Registry applications and liaising with lenders and borrowers.
To be responsible for ensuring achievement of own key financial targets, including fees, contribution and payment of debts and disbursements. This will be 100% fee-earning role.
Maintaining accurate data on case manager and the Firm’s financial management systems.
To monitor own performance in relation to the number of live files, file closures, file openings, billing, time recording and to take appropriate action to ensure targets are met.
Scope all matters appropriately, including use of budget templates, delivering work on time and on budget.
To be responsible for the delivery of the service to the client, ensuring that the highest standards of client care are maintained so that clients use DMHS again and recommend the firm to others.
To assist with marketing and business development initiatives such as writing for e-newsletters, attending seminars and attending other business development activities.Other information
Knowledge, Skills and Experience Required
Experience in commercial property, residential investment and/or real estate finance would be advantageous (but not essential).
Knowledge of property legislation and relevant case law.
Able to effectively manage a busy caseload and their time to achieve client and internal deadlines.
Understanding the importance of client care with an ability to deal with a wide range of clients with differing objectives including being able to understand the commercial objectives of the client.
Able to work within a team and provide support to Legal Executives, Solicitors, Associates and Partners as appropriate.
Confident Excel skills.
Competent IT skills including Outlook, Word, and time recording systems.
Ability to draft documentation with attention to detail.
Communicate effectively with clients, in writing, over the telephone and in meetings. Benefits
