The Registered Nurse (RN) in the Emergency Room (ER) provides critical care to patients in urgent or emergent conditions. The RN works in a fast-paced, high-pressure environment, delivering immediate care to patients suffering from injuries, illnesses, or trauma. Responsibilities include assessment, triage, treatment, collaboration with medical staff, monitoring, documentation, patient and family communication, infection control, crisis management, discharge planning, and teamwork.
Key Responsibilities
* Triage and Patient Assessment:
o Perform initial assessments, triage based on severity, evaluate history, conduct physical assessments, and collect vital signs.
* Emergency Care and Treatment:
o Administer medications, perform wound care, provide emergency interventions including CPR and ACLS, assist in resuscitation efforts.
* Collaboration with Medical Team:
o Work with physicians and staff to develop care plans, assist with diagnostics, communicate effectively.
* Monitoring and Documentation:
o Monitor patient conditions, document assessments and treatments accurately, ensure compliance with standards.
* Patient and Family Communication:
o Explain diagnoses and procedures, provide emotional support, advocate for patient needs.
* Infection Control and Safety:
o Follow infection protocols, maintain a safe environment, respond to biohazard situations.
* Crisis Management:
o Handle emergencies with critical thinking, manage high-stress situations, prioritize care.
* Patient Discharge and Follow-Up:
o Provide discharge instructions, educate on preventive care, coordinate follow-up.
* Teamwork and Mentorship:
o Collaborate with staff, mentor new nurses and students.
