SWETA Advanced Endoscopy Fellowship 2026/2027

The South West Endoscopy Training Academy (SWETA) has been established to address the challenges facing the regions trainees training in endoscopy. The COVID pandemic resulted in a significant reduction in endoscopy training opportunities. Furthermore, IMT training will shorten the length of time that gastroenterology trainees will have to develop their endoscopy competencies.

The SWETA advanced endoscopy fellowship has been designed to enable gastroenterology trainees to have a defined period of training to focus on specialist endoscopic skills. At North Bristol NHS Trust (NBT), we can offer bespoke training in:

* Small bowel endoscopy including capsule endoscopy & double balloon enteroscoy
* Advanced colonic polypectomy

We would anticipate that the successful candidate would focus on one of these specialist areas.

Main duties of the job

The aim of the fellowship is to increase endoscopy experience whilst still being able to access other speciality training. Therefore, posts should be eligible for OOP-T status and could count towards training (the length of time that counts toward clinical training will be dependent on OOPT application and SAC approval)

The successful candidate will also have a significant involvement in organising and delivering endoscopy training both within NBT and regionally. They will facilitate 4 one-day Introduction to Endoscopy courses at NBT using new endoscopy screen-based simulators to introduce technical skills to novice endoscopists from across the southwest. There are also added opportunities to be involved in the SWETA haemostasis and polypectomy courses, human factors in-situ simulation training and endoscopic non-technical skills courses (HiFIVE).

Academy fellows will also be expected to join a monthly review meeting run by the Director of SWETA. This will be an opportunity to share progress, challenges and will have an educational component focussed on endoscopy training.

The academy fellowships are most suited to ST5+ gastroenterology trainees who are already JAG accredited in gastroscopy.
